Assignment 1

APRIL 2014

Free Fall Problems 1. An object is tossed into the air. As it rises, what happens to the acceleration of the object? 2. A 10 kg object is dropped from rest. (a) How far will it drop in 2 s ? (b) How long will it take a 5 kg object to drop the same distance? 3. An object is dropped from rest from the top of a 100 m building. How long will it take for the object to hit the ground? 4. A cliff diver from the top of a 100 m cliff. He begins his dive by jumping up with a velocity of 5 m/s. (a) How long does it take for him to hit the water below? (b) What is his velocity right before he hits the water? 5. A sandbag is dropped from a hot air balloon that is 300 m above the ground and rising at a rate of 13 m/s. (a) How long does it take for the sandbag to hit the ground? (b) How fast is the sand bag going when it hits the ground?

Projectile Motion Problems

1.

A Physics text book is dropped from a height of 1.0 m onto a stationary cockroach. (a) (b) (c) How long does it take for the book to reach the ground? What will the velocity of the book be when it reaches the ground? The cockroach sees the book the moment it is released and must move 10 cm to get out of the way. How fast must the cockroach move to avoid a sticky finish?

A golf ball is hit and leaves the ground at a 30 o angle above the horizontal with a velocity of 60 m/s. Sadly the ball strikes a tree which is in its path 50 m away and drops straight to the ground. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) Find the horizontal and vertical components of the initial velocity. How long was the ball in the air before it hit the tree? How high up the tree did the ball hit? With speed did the ball hit the tree? How far would the ball have travelled if the tree had not been in the way?
