Design Challenge
The Client
This design is for a major producer of children's toys. The final design should be safe and easy to operate. The final design will be easy to manufacture.
Introduction
The challenge is to build a device that shoots small projectiles with accuracy. The projectile consists of a light weight aerated substance that is easy to obtain and safe to use for small children. The device will be based on preliminary designs created in Autodesk. All designs will have a complete bill of material (BOM) prior to construction.
Design Statement
Use the engineering design process to build the projection device. A minimum of two designs will be evaluated. The final prototype designs will be justified within a design matrix.
Design Constraints
The final design will have the ability to deliver the projectile a minimum of 35 feet. The minimum number of components will be 11. The maximum number of components will be 15. No duplicate parts unless at least 10 components are used. Multi colored finish with company logo.
Design Constraints
Required Documentation
Initial Designs (2) minimum (sketch). Completed design decision matrix. Final design drawing (Autodesk) in both standard and exploded views. Final BOM with all components. Company logo on all applicable documents.
Decision Matrix
How to use a decision matrix: First, look at whether each possible solution met your design requirements. Consider solutions that did a much better job than others, and reject those that did not meet the requirements. Some criteria apply to virtually every design. Good designers consider these universal design criteria when choosing which possible solution to implement: Elegance Robustness Aesthetics
Decision Matrix
Resources Time Skill required Safety The chart has the requirements and criteria on one axis and the different solutions on the other. If your requirements and solutions are relatively simple, you can sometimes just list the pros and cons for each solution. Pros are good things about a solution and cons are bad things.
