Students will be able to make predictions based on the evidence in the text. Materials: Wonder by R.J. Palacio Readers notebooks Pencil Lesson Sequence: Before Reading: Readers today we are going to begin reading one of my favorite books, Wonder. Has anyone heard of it? It is fairly new. The reason I like this book is because it is narrated by the main character, August. Today we are going to create character charts that way we have a deeper understanding of each character. We can also refer back to the chart if we have questions about a character. Any questions about the book? Can we make predictions about the book? What do you observe on the cover? I think that maybe August has a funny eye because the cover shows a picture of just one eye. Lets begin reading. During Reading: Read the first chapter and introduce the main character, August. Lets write down August in our character charts. Who can tell me something they observed about August? What in the text makes you think that? Who is Via? (Augusts sister) What do we know about Via? What in the text makes you think that? Write Via on our charts.

Pron 2 Continue reading until Summer Summary is introduced. What do we know about Summer? Write Summer in your charts. After Reading: Okay readers we have a few characters on our charts, who make a prediction as to what will happen to these three characters, or more specifically, August? What other predictions can you as readers make? What in the text makes you think that? Write your predictions in your readers notebooks. We will continue reading tomorrow and hopefully you can make more predications when other characters are introduced. Assessment: Students will be successful if they are able to identify the characters by using terms in the text to describe them. Students will be successful if they can explain their predictions by backing up their response with words from the text. Teacher will formatively assess the students when they are asked to share their predictions with the class.
