Halliday ENGL 106 February 9, 2014 Freedom for Murray and Rodriguez Many connections can be drawn from the symbolic, depths of literacy. For some, literacy is a way to express knowledge, and for others, it is way to vent stress or anger, but for Donald and Richard, it is a way to see freedom. All Writing is Autobiography by Donald M. Murray and Richard Rodriguezs, ARIA: A Memoir of a Bilingual Childhood discuss the connections between language and self reflection. In order to achieve our literacy goals, we must sometimes adapt to our surroundings, finding courage within ourselves to make that initial step. The primary connection I made between the two essays is freedom. Both Murray and Rodriguez express satisfaction and comfort through writing and language. On several accounts, Rodriguez analyzes his parents emotions when they speak gracefully in Spanish rather than struggle through their broken English. He recalls, I remember many nights when my father would come back from work, and Id hear him call out to my mother in Spanish, his voice would sound the light and free notes that he never could manage in English (Rodriguez). Richard was raised in a Spanish speaking home, but had to learn English for school. Some of my friends had studied abroad last semester and when they came home, they sometimes spoke in Spanish when we hung out. This made me feel small and out of place. Rodriguezs situation is not uncommon and is not something that should be overlooked.

2 Murrays essay portrays self reflection through writing. This freedom is less tangible than Rodriguezs only because this freedom is self expressing. I immediately picked up on Murrays purpose of the essay, to give a perspective. He highlights his struggles, feelings, and emotions stimulated through literature, and more specifically, writing. Similarly, I like to write to release emotions. On several occasions Ive stopped midway through homework just to go continue on an ongoing, 16 page, word document that I started after coming to college. One of my favorite quotes that Ive pulled from an essay comes from Murrays writing, John Hawks had said, Fiction is an act of revenge I hope not, but I can not yet deny the importance of that element in my writing. Revenge against family, revenge against the Army and war, revenge against school (Murray). Not only does this quote fulfill the emotions for self reflection, but it supports the idea that our imaginations have no ceiling. Literature is powerful.
