Assessing Motivation Modifications

It seems that this requires to be less egocentric in order to see others point of view/opinion. Can introduce students to different points of views and encourages higher order thinking and critical thinking.

Identifying Topics: A topic must be chosen to begin planning. For Discussion to be beneficial, topic should be controversial. Specifying Learning Objectives: Three types: think about a topic more analytically, practice in critical thinking, and social development. Developing Student Knowledge: Prior, extensive knowledge about the topic before discussion can begin. Establishing Structure: Discussions can be structured in a variety of ways, but one must make sure discussions are highly organized and structured in order to be effective.

Introduction: Must gain the students attention in order to have a successful discussion, helps focus students directly on the discussion topic. Exploration: Students focus on the topic or issue and share their perspectives with each other (offering a variety of perspectives is important and helps you reach each of your objectives) Teachers must keep the discussion focused and moving and provide students with experiences that promote social development. Closure: A review of summarizing statement at the end of the lesson. Students dont come to one single conclusion, but instead leave with a clear idea of what they discussed and how it linked to the next days lesson

Assessment: Two types; first is summative and includes assessing content and critical thinking (typically with essay items that require providing evidence and making conclusions based on evidence). Second is formative and includes assessing social development (typically with observations of students) Motivation: uses students need for social interaction and their social nature for a motivating force. Modifications: depending on the environment, modifications can be made such as: utilizing technology in discussions and using cooperative learning with different age groups.

So what? What is important to understand about this?

This model is useful in helping students engage in active learning while developing critical thinking skills.
