Human Health and Physiology: Introduction IB Biology HL 11

Objectives Introduce Human Health and Physiology unit Assess students prior knowledge on human anatomy and physiology Understandings How anatomy relates to physiology How human health and physiology connects to previous unit on cells Assessment Pre-assessment handout (graded on completion) Gallery walk participation Instructional Approach Activity Hook: Writing prompt Based on textbook reading and your own prior knowledge, how does anatomy relate to physiology? Discuss with partner Human health and physiology unit introduction Students already have background knowledge in the material described in the list below. In a class discussion with student input, the teacher guides students to cover the following information while jotting down important points on the whiteboard. Students are expected to take notes. Anatomy and physiology Anatomy: structure Physiology: how a structure functions Structural organization/ relate to past units atoms form cells cell groups into tissues tissues arranged into organs organs form organ systems organ systems form organism To sustain life, an organism must respond to stimuli, digest nutrients, excrete wastes, carry on metabolism, reproduce itself, and grow Pre-Assessment handout Gallery Walk Students grouped in pairs, 2mins per printout Students write down what they already know about the terms and images associated with different body systems Sharing with class Mini wrap-up Distribute unit plan schedule Briefly introduce unit project (EF_UnitProject_HHP) Time 5 min

Differentiation As the introduction of Human Health and Physiology consists of notes that provides definition and connects this unit to past units, it is important for students to get a good grasp as the background for the unit. While some students have no problem taking notes on their own, those requiring extra assistance will be provided with a note-taking guide, shown below:

For the Gallery Walk, I will put students in pairs strategically, pairing lower-achieving students with higher-achieving ones who are willing to assist. With students like Richard Liang who constantly search for challenges, I will pair them with other like-minded students such that they can discuss the same Gallery Walk sheets at an advanced level. By pairing students like so, I hope to guide every students and give them a fair opportunity to succeed regardless of what academic levels they are in.
