Welcome to Vista Middle School students, parents, and/or guardians! I hope you had a beautiful and restful summer break. My name is Josefina (Josie) Miller, and I am your son/daughters 6th grade language arts teacher for the 2013-2014 school year. I am very exited to be working with you and your student this year. For 6th grade language arts, we will be following the new Common Core Standards this year. These standards will be the driving force for our lessons and projects. We will focus on reading informational texts, as well as, literature. Our writing will include many different types of 5-paragraph essays, argument pieces, narratives, etc. and will utilize the 7-Traits in the Writing Process. Speaking, listening, and medial literacy will also be emphasized. To complement our studies this year, your homework will consist of the following:

Students will receive grades based on these scales: A (90-100%) B (80-89%) C (70-79%) D(60-69%) F (0-59%)

Classroom expectations are for students to be safe, prepared, punctual, productive, and respectful. Discipline will be handled according to the LCPS and Vista Middle School policy. (Please refer to the Vista Middle School handbook.) I look forward to working in collaboration with you and your student this school year. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please feel free to call me at Vista Middle School 575-527-9465 after 3:30 p.m. I can also be contacted via e-mail at jomiller@lcps.k12.nm.us.

Also, sometimes 1, 2, 3, 4 will be used: 1-Beginning 2-Near Proficient 3-Proficient 4-Advanced All grades will be easily accessible and posted via ParentVue once a week. Students are also required to have school materials at all times. For language arts, students will need pencils, pens, paper, color pencils, different color markers, post-its, loose leaf paper, and (2) composition books. Please replenish materials throughout the school year. Some projects may require additional materials, but can be purchased as needed.
My overall mission statement is to make sure that your son or daughter gains a sense of the real world through different learning activities. Your student will receive rigorous and challenging assignments in where they will learn to apply different skills such as analytical, critical, and problem solving skills.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your son/daughters life. **Parents, please note that I have an open door policy. This is your classroom too, and you are welcome anytime.
