RESULTS F R O M TRIALS O F A NEW YAWSOlJDE DESIGN R.L. Pope

SUMMARY A s e r i e s of t h r e e t r i a l s has been conducted u s i n g a r t i l L e r y s h e l l s f i t t e d w i t h yawsondes. The f i r s t two jrawsondes were manufactured ilrom a new Weapons Systems Research Laboratlory d e s i g n w h i l e t h e t h i r d yawsonde was s u p p l i e d by t h e B a l l i s t i c Research Laboratory, USA. These were t h e f i r s t t r i a l s of t h e W S R L d e s i g n and provided u s e f u l d a t a f o r t h e f i r s t q u a r t e r of t h e f l i g h t of t h e s h e l l . A n a l y s i s of t h e data was somewllhat hampered by t-he absence of t r a j e c t o r y d a t a andl of a c c u r ~ a t e calibrations f o r the W S R L yawsondes; however, some u s e ~ f u l r e s u l t s have been o b t a i n e d from t h e d a t a a n a l y s i s and t h w e a r e r e p o r t e d h e r e . The r e p o r t i n c l u d e s a b r i e f d e s c r i p t i o n of t h e t r i ( a 1 c o n d i t i o n s and a summary of s u g g e s t i o n s f o r improviqg t h e q u a l i t y and u s e f u l n e s s of t h e d a t a o b t a i n e d from subsequeint t r i a l s .
