even number to go with. Raise your hand if
you have an even number. 10 seconds. Take
your notebook, pencil and equation card.
-Switch cards. Write down the number and

5
Can anyone think of an example of a rate?

Unit rate:
294 miles on 10 gallons
$0.72 for 12 ounces
$3.88 for 2 pounds
3.4 inches of rain in 2 months
200 meters in 23.5 seconds

-small units to large units need less, so #
should get smaller

- Feet to inches

Rules (???):
-Find conversion factors needed.
-Set up con. fac. so units will cancel

Proportion Applications

What are students doing?
1 ATR 15-20
2

-Can use proportions in different contexts in
real life. What are some places or ways
youve see proportions?

We can use proportions to scale things.

Lets look at an example of a floor plan.
(floor plan sheet) Take a minute to study it.
Whats it show you? Where is the scale and
what does it mean? What is it relating? (So
its a ratio that we could use later.)

Lets just look at the living room. What are
its dimensions according to the blue print?
Lets just focus on the length for now. What
can I use to help me solve this? How do I set
up my proportion labels?
Width

You try and find the dimensions of the deck
in real life..

How do I set it up? Trail

Another similar application is using a map to
calculate distance between 2 places. So
take out your map. Familiarize yourself with
it. Any similarities to the floor plan? Where
is the scale? What does it mean/represent?

Find how far ____ is from _____.

Zoolander clip
Trail.

Take out the recipe card.
Read through it. What do you notice? How
many ___ (eggs, milk, etc) do I need? How
many servings does it make? If I wanted to
double this recipe, how many ___ (eggs,
milk, etc.) would I need now? Lets set this
up proportionally. So if I double it, how
many servings is that?

What if I wanted of the recipe? How
would you set it up? Trail

I converted my recipe for some number of
guests, and it came out that I only needed 1
egg, how many guests am I serving?
Trail.

Take out shapes sheet. These are similar
shapes. Anyone know what that means?
Their sides are proportional. I can use a
ratio of their sides for my proportion. Lets
try this side.

You try this side/ hypotenuse, etc.

Take out shadows sheet. Read through. Try
first one on own. We go over together/ put
work up. Do 2
nd
on own.
