Slave Life

Most labored in fields tending tobacco, cutting
sugarcane, or picking cotton.







Most were whipped with a lash usually
made of rawhide or cowhide.


Slave Codes: laws passed to control
enslaved people.
- denied slaves basic human rights.
Slaves were sold on the auction
block (a humiliating practice)

- marriages were not permanent

- Sunday families gathered for worship
- African Americans adapted to Christianity
- Message of hope for the downtrodden
- Spirituals expressed a message of salvation
- Some resisted with armed force
- Denmark Vessey and Nat Turner
- Abolitionists feared they setback efforts to
end slavery.

Was his rebellion successful? Why or why not. Was VA
