Reflection

The artifact that I chose to represent of Standard Five: Instructional Delivery is a lesson
plan that I created in Spring 2013. The lesson is for my Kindergarten placement. This was my
second observed lesson out of a total of four. This artifact reflects my ability to modify
instructional methods and materials to reach the needs of all my students. This artifact also
demonstrates my ability to adjust strategies and monitor my teaching in response to feedback
from students.
This artifact is an appropriate representation of Knowledge Indicator E because it has
helped me learn and improve techniques for modifying my instructional methods, materials, and
the environment to facilitate learning for students with diverse learning characteristics. In this
lesson plan, I use a variety of teaching methods to help all of my students learn. To start the
lesson we do a group activity in which students have to think about the story we read and the
words that are associated with growing a plant, and what they may mean. I use dry erase boards
and the book in order to help facilitate this activity. We move to a step-by-step art activity, after
having a group discussion about the book and vocabulary. Children get to openly participate and
share their own experiences growing a flower in comparisons to the one in the story. These
different teaching styles help facilitate learning for this group of students because of the different
learning styles that make up the class. If a child has a difficult time learning only through oral
communication, the pictures in the story and dry erase boards help them become more involved
in the lesson.
This artifact is also representative of Performance Indicator B because it demonstrates my
ability to monitor and adjust strategies in response to feedback from students. Within my lesson
plan, I include dialogue that I will say, as well as anticipated student responses that expect to
receive from the students. By thinking ahead, I am able to come up with a variety of questions
that I can ask in order to better facilitate learning from my students. I am also able to think about
possible issues that may arise. In the planning process I realized that I needed to pre-glue the
seeds on to the paper, because I anticipated the students having a difficult time with that part of
the lesson.
This artifact demonstrates my growth and development as a teacher because it gave me
the opportunity to create, plan, and implement a lesson. I was able to prepare anticipated
responses in order to plan ahead for adjustment throughout the lesson. This lesson allowed me to
plan with a variety of teaching strategies in order to fit my students needs. I realized that having
the students hot glue themselves wouldnt fit their needs, so I needed to accommodate for that. I
will be a much better teacher in the future by having experience with lesson planning and
instructional delivery.
