Methods
[5]
Hook:
Open the class period by playing Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. This is a
song with slightly dystopian themes. Dont tell the students, though. Just let
them listen. (You will refer more to this at the end of the lesson.)
[40]
The Main Event:
Divide students up into six groups. Be sure Aspbergers student is with a group
that will assist and encourage her to be a part of the conversation. Keep
an eye on her throughout this group work time.
Each group will look at a di"erent text of the three we read throughout the
dystopian unit. Assign a di"erent text to each group, repeating the text.
The students are to ll out the graphic organizer for the text they were assigned to
look at. There will only be one graphic organizer handed out per group, so a
scribe should be designated within each group. (There will obviously be some
overlap, since the books should be repeated.)
Once the groups are done lling out the graphic organizer, they will share their
responses with the class. (Collect their graphic organizers and make copies to
put in packets so students have them to refer back to.)
[5-10]
Closure:
Listen to the song again.
Journal: In what ways does, Radioactive, portray some dystopian ideas?
Does it t on our graphic organizer?
Sponge Activity: If there is additional time at the end, allow time for
students to review for nal assessment tomorrow!
