Student Teaching Reflection
The most significant aspect of my learning about students was realizing how unique each
child was, while at the same time seeing the importance for them to learn and grow in a
welcoming and social environment. I learned how distinctive each child was as I interacted with
them throughout the day, especially during the times when I least expected for them to approach
me and engage in a conversation or interaction. These conversations and interactions showed me
how important it is for me to always be a teacher who develops a foundation of sharing ones
ideas and thoughts. At the beginning of the year, I set my own schedule and planned for each
day without considering that the children would be bringing in experiences from their own lives
that were ultimately more important to be shared and explored than my own set plans. As I
became more flexible and open to the childrens ideas and stories, I was better able to understand
what each child needed emotionally, socially, and academically.
As I began to understand the deeper needs of my students, I was able to more effectively
plan my instruction regarding the questions I asked, the books I read, and activities I desired for
my students to engage in. I learned that in early childhood and most likely any other grade, it is
important for me to always engage in the activities and lessons I plan, but also leave space and
time for the children to drive the lessons. Reflecting on this past year helps me to see how much
both my students and I have grown, and how hard it is going to be to say goodbye on graduation
day. However, the knowledge that I was there during their first years in school to support,
encourage, and learn with them, makes me satisfied and excited to continue working with
children and having this same positive impact.
