Cardarelli, R. (2014). Risk of Future Offense Among Probationers with Co-
occurring Substance Use and Mental Health Disorders. Community Mental Health
Journal, 50(3), 288-295. doi:10.1007/s10597-013-9624-4

In the article Risk of Future Offense Among Probationers with Co-occuring Substance
Use ad Mental Health Disorders, Balyakina et al. describe the use of drugs among those
with mental health disorders, who it a specific criteria. This criteria being people on
probation who are likely to be multiple offenders. They go in depth into research done
with multiple criminal justice systems and the data they have in common. These systems
often have programs devoted to adults with drug and alcohol dependencies as well as
mental health issues. Overall, the research conducted was to examine a pattern between
offenders and their co-occurring disorders. In their research, they found that those who
were screened for co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders, who tested
positive, were at a higher risk for being repeat offenders in the criminal justice system.
The primary use of argument in this research is definition argument. The authors are
speaking as if all readers are familiar with this topic, and the research is very self-
explanatory.

According to Balyakina et al. the research that shows these people are higher offenders
points toward the idea that having such a co-occurring disorder is negative. The balance
between mental health and substance abuse is one that is often seen as negative and the
research provided in this article coincides with that. This further proves that those who
abuse substances due to their mental health disorders are negatively affecting the world
around them, including the criminal justice system.

In their article written for Health Affairs publication, Issacs et al. discuss how New York
State is beginning funding for mental health and substance abuse care. The research states
that roughly half of all people with mental disorders also have issues with abusing
substances. The care is not there for these abusers though. The article states how in 2007
two of the New York state agencies, Mental Health and the Office of Alcoholism and
Substance Abuse Services are merging their offices to help better treat this group of
people. This shows that there is a problem and the state of New York is actively trying to
pursue avenues to help those who meet the criteria.

The article shows that clearly there was a problem with abusers of substances and those
suffering from mental health disorders. The state of New York is actively trying to help
these people; by changing the way those affected get the proper care they need. The
specialized care that those affected need is often very costly and can take a toll on
taxpayers. By having state agencies collaborate these two forms of care is helpful to all
involved. Most of the time those with both of these issues, only get help for one, so by
collaborating this will be able to treat both mental health and substance abuse.

Namkee G., C., & DiNitto, D. M. (2013, October). Mental health & substance use:
Challenges for serving older adults. Indian Journal of Medical Research. pp. 439-
442.

In their editorial, Namkee and DiNitto describe problems facing an older generation of
those with substance abuse problems as well as mental health disorders. The article is
primarily focused on the types of care that can be provided to the silver tsunami
generation. Research quoted in this editorial includes facts showing that physical
inactivity, sleep disturbances, smoking and drinking are all risk factors for serious health
problems in this older generation. The research also further proves their argument that the
health care provided for this generation is lacking. They state that geriatric mental health
coverage is often overlooked and then leads to substance abuse in this generation. The
editorial also goes into why those older adults are not actively seeking medical care for
their co-occurring disorders. For example, low-income, lack of education, myths about
being able to control these problems, as well as lack of specialized training for geriatric
patients.

According to Namkee and DiNitto, their article alludes to these co-occurring disorders
being negative. Despite the intensive research done to find out about the care revolving
around these patients, the issue is still prevalent. The age of those abuse substances does
not change the fact that they are abusing them. Often times, getting older can be
depressing, so, geriatrics turn to substances to help heal this depression. This further
proves the fact that geriatric care and specialized treatment needs to be provided for all
ages.

NathanAuneTM. Prescription Drug Abuse PSA. Online Video Clip. YouTube, 30
August 2010. Spring 2014.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ND0eJar3nTU&feature=youtu.be

This prescription drug abuse PSA helps show the correlation between what happens when
drugs are abused to help ease pain. The clip shows a boy who was prescribed pills for his
athletic injury, then continues to use them and abuse them to help ease other types of
pain. The PSA varies in its accounts of the boys life. From school, to selling these drugs,
to taking them, to eventually being arrested for his indiscretions. The clip helps further
the argument that substance abuse and mental illness are related, because the boy states
how it helps take the pain away.

The clip is a PSA, a public service announcement, so its intended audience is those who
would be subjected to this type of life. The accounts are fictional (although could be
based on true events) so the credibility only goes to the fact that the audience should be
aware enough to realize that this can and has happened.

Prozac Nation. Dir. Erik Skjoldbjaerg. Miramax Films, Millennium Films. 2003.

This video clip shows someone who is undergoing a mental breakdown. The main
character is overwhelmed and turns to drugs and alcohol to help her get through her
troubles. This clip helps further prove the idea that mental health disorders and substance
abuse go hand in hand. This clip helps show the deep depression that people can be in
and how they can immediately change the way they act and the way they are portrayed in
society.

According to the film, this is a nation of people who abuse drugs and alcohol to help
cope with their problems. The clip helps show the correlation between drug and alcohol
abuse and mental health disorders. The credibility that this clip has is varied. Because it is
a fictional film, the portrayal is only that of the director of the film. So, the audience has
their own interpretation of what is happening and what is making the characters in the
film do what they are doing.

Requiem For A Dream. Dir. Darren Aronofsky. Artisan Entertainment, Thousand
Words, Sibling Productions. 2000.

This video clip is a montage of clips of the usage and effects of drugs. The main
takeaway is that drugs affect everything from your motor skills to your ability to see life
normally. The clips are very effective in the fact that they are quickly moving and it helps
really break up the idea that drugs are detrimental to ones health. These clips do not show
the full extent of the film, but the film dives deeper into the idea that mental health
problems are easily solved with drugs and alcohol abuse. The film follows characters
through their financial and mental problems and how they cope using drugs.

According to the film, this is a way of life for these people who choose to abuse drugs
and alcohol to help cope with their mental anguish. These fast moving clips help show
the correlation between what happens to your body and drug use. The credibility of the
film, again, is varied, because it is a fictional film, the portrayal is that of the director of
the film. So, again, the audience has their own interpretation of what is happening and
what is forcing these characters to turn to their eventual outcome of drugs and alcohol.
