The artifact that I selected to successfully demonstrate Standard 6: Reading, Writing, and

Oral Communication is a small group lesson for literacy instruction designed for a
preschool classroom. This artifact addresses the needs of Standard 6 as, through my
overall outline of the lesson, specified goals, and planned instruction I am able to
demonstrate my ability to meet the needs of student reading, writing, and oral growth and
development. Furthermore, in this lesson I prove my ability to differentiate for students
learning at varied levels of writing, writing, and oral communication.

The small group lesson for literacy instruction I have created adequately embodies
Knowledge Indicator F because in my lessons you can see detailed accounts on how I
have prepared lessons that involve integrating components of reading, writing, and oral
communication into the lesson. This can be seen specifically in the small group lesson
that involves the students reading a little reader called Orsens Tummy Ache. In this
lesson, the students are instructed to first talk about the story based off of what they
noticed from the pictures. The students then work together to read the story and stretch
out all the words. Finally, the students used labeled unifix cubes to build, or write, so
to speak, the words they know. I found this method of incorporating all the areas of
literacy to be extremely effective in my small group lessons. This chosen artifact also
encompasses Performance Indicator E. As seen in my anticipated student response and
teacher dialogue I have successfully accounted for the various needs and questions of my
students. Through this process I have been able to demonstrate my ability to model,
explain, and instruct various elements of my literacy goals through my lessons.

This particular artifactmy small group lesson for literacy instruction shows my
development as a novice teacher because it demonstrates my ability to not only prepare
lessons, but also to also align standards and goals to my lessons, gather age appropriate
material, and anticipate differentiated needs of my students. By completing not only the
planning portion of this lesson but also the instruction portion, I have gained valuable
experience that has aided in my growth as a teacher particularly in the literacy area of
instruction.
