Publication 13.
This is the first article to provide a really new fresh insight into ecological mechanisms of eutrophication
and abnormal increase in phytoplankton abundance [13]. The new ideas of this paper are based on new
experimental results of the author. His new experimental data are on effects of chemical pollutants on
aquatic organisms, including negative effects of synthetic surfactants and detergent mixtures on filterfeeders. Also, a new insight into how ecosystem runs water self-purification.

Publication 14.
The first publication in which a concise outline was made of the authors innovative theory of water selfpurification [14]. A unique short list of physical, chemical, and biological processes of water selfpurification is given [14].

Publication 15.

It is the first paper in which it was clearly proved that the synthetic chemical (exemplified by the
surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate, SDS), as soon as it pollutes water, produces dangerous effects on
both bivalve mollusks [such as marine mussels ( Mytilus edulis)] and phytoplankton [15].

ABSTRACT. A new method of determination of a safe allowable load of contaminants on the laboratory
systems with aquatic macrophytes, under conditions of long-term iterative introduction of the
pollutants into the systems, was proposed and developed in this research paper. No such methods were
known until now. The current scientific terminology was supplemented by the authors in order to
provide a detailed classification of various types of safe allowable loads of contaminants on biosystems,
especially on biosystems with aquatic macrophytes which improve water quality. The new method
allows to do a quantitative assessment of a safe allowable load in case of various chemical
contaminants. It is the first time that the parameters of safe loads were specified for concrete water
biosystems and pollutants. The specific example of a contaminant that was studied in this paper was the
anionic surfactant (surface active agent), sodium dodecyl sulfate.

plant: Binding to Ceratophyllum demersum // Ecologica (2010) [ISSN 0354-3285] Vol. 17(57) p. 3-6.
Abstract : This is the first time it was shown that the nanoparticles of gold (Au) in substantial amount
bind to the living biomass of the aquatic plant (macrophyte), Ceratophyllum demersum. The
concentrations of gold were measured in the samples of the phytomass using neutron activation
analysis (NAA). As a result of the binding and/or immobilization of the nanoparticles, the amount of gold
in the samples of the phytomass increased manifold above the background level of gold in the plant
tissues. The increase was by two orders of magnitude. The new data added some new information to
the modern vision of the multifunctional role of the biota in the migration of elements in aquatic
ecosystems [9, 10]. Also, the result added new information to the studies of interactions of gold with
organisms [17-23] that may contribute to new biotechnologies.

This study deals with the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) (0.1, 1, and 10 mg/liter) on the growth
dynamics and physiological state of the microalga Dunaliella salina Teod. (Chlorophyta). The effect of
SDS increased with increasing its concentration. At 10 mg/liter, the toxicant significantly inhibited
microalgae growth and led to a decrease in chlorophyll a and carotinoid contents.

the reservoir water quality

Specific features of the Uchinsk reservoir discharge during the diatomic algae spring blooming period in
years with different temperature, hydro/chemical and hydro/dynamic conditions have been
investigated. It has been shown that the blooming terms depend on water temperature in the reservoir
while wind velocity and direction cause variations of algae amount in the discharge. Total level of the
diatomic algae development depends on hydro/chemical conditions, in particular, on quantity of various
forms of nitrogen and mineral phosphorous. The revealed regularities of the diatomic algae spring
development peak formation enable to make a short-term forecast of quality for water being supplied
for urban needs.

The paper gives data on biogenic load dynamics for the Lake Chud-Pskov for the period 1998-2007; the
main sources of biogenic matter pollution have been revealed, assessment of the lake ecological state
has been given in connection with the biogenic load upon it; priorities in measures on the greatest
transboundary water body of Europe euthrophication level decrease have been identified.
