To Whom It May Concern,

I have worked closely with Janice Hartman for three years while she has been employed as a
teacher at J. L. Francis Elementary School in Richmond Public Schools. She has impressed me
as compassionate and stellar master teacher invigorated by the challenges of inner city
students. She has initiated many collaborative projects with her kindergarten team reflecting her
strengths of technology integration and hands-on learning in all content areas. She expertly
assesses students understanding and is able to guide and move students to the next level of
learning.

I have observed Janices encouraging, positive, loving, and warm classroom climate. Her high
expectations for all students were evident by all of her students making significant strides in the
last three years adjusting to school, learning to read, write and do mathematics, and
successfully transition to first grade. Her students loved to share the latest learned activities in
her classroom during our library lessons. It is so critical to Janice that her students progress
academically as well as actively engage in the love of learning. Her students clearly
demonstrate the passion and love of learning that she emanates in her classroom. Each year I
am able to tell which first graders are her former students by their positive passion for learning
and ability to anticipate and answer higher level thinking questions.

When I visited Janices classroom, I knew the children understood classroom procedures and
expectations without her using her words. Students worked on dynamic center activities,
listened attentively to whole class stories, and transitioned beautifully. She is an avid user of
technology and often sought my recommendations for print and website resources. She and I
share a passion for a site called www.wegivebooks.org which has free ebooks. She has shared
this site with students and families. She uses Accelerated Reader in her weekly language arts
lessons and students take group AR tests to complement this whole school initiative.

Janice will be a treasure to the Chesterfield County Public School system and I very highly
recommend her for a teaching position. She has the passion for teaching that all students in
your district need to experience. Even though she will be extremely missed at our school family,
her experiences and passion will enable your school system to blossom. I would be delighted to
discuss Janices stellar, compassionate, and highly successful teaching at any time at 804-972-
