Healthy Habits: Timing for Developing

Sustainable Healthy Behaviors in

Children and Adolescents Grant
Narrative

We are a medium sized school district in central Wisconsin. We have 2,635 students enrolled for
grade levels K-12.Our district consists of 6 elementary schools, one middle School, and one high
school. As a district we are economically disadvantaged with just under 50% of our students living
below the poverty line. We are predominant in English language, with only 51 students being below
proficient. Our district is split up fairly even between male and female students. While the individual
numbers are not large we do have representatives of several races/ethnicities. We have about 2,400
students who declare they are Caucasian. We also have more than 250 students who declare they are
Asian, African American, American Indian, and Hispanic students. We make up a close-knit
community and we have very strong core values.
Currently we are seeking a grant to help us improve on our weaknesses; we have identified the
lack of multi-cultural materials and resources in our health classes as our weakness. Through the
Healthy Habits: Timing for developing sustainable healthy behaviors in children and adolescents
grant, health education teachers will be able to begin making our weaknesses stronger. With our
district becoming more diverse it has become apparent that we are not meeting all of our students
needs. With this grant we would include more multi-cultural lessons/units and demographical
information to our students by getting culturally diverse textbooks for the students to learn from and
the educators to create their lesson plans from. We will also be bringing in professional speakers with
experiences or expertise that range from former bully, victim of bullying, as well as bystander of
bullying to discuss bullying and how bullying behaviors negatively impact all stakeholders of a
school and community. By bringing in guest speakers, getting new text books to base new lessons on
the students will be exposed to and given the opportunity to develop both the knowledge about
culture and diversity, and become more skilled in advocacy efforts to end the negative impact of bully
behaviors.
First we would begin by taking assessment of our current school through polls and
questionnaires. From those results we will formulate health education lesson plans to help meet our
students multicultural needs. A questionnaire will be done every year with the seniors to assess our
improvements.
