Topic: Mini-Lesson Transitions

Grade: 6th Grade Language Arts
Date: Tuesday March 26, 2013
Instructional Objective:
1.0 Students will understand that transitions help the flow of their personal narrative essay.
1.1 Students will be able to use appropriate transitions in their personal narrative.
1.2 Students will be able to use the words to connect events in a personal narrative so the
writing smoothly connects from event to event.
Set:
Read the narrative to the students, instructing them to listen for details.
Teacher asks if anyone can recognize transition words.
Materials:
Writing notebooks
Copies of Transition Word List
Objective/Purpose:
In a personal narrative, transitions are important to have throughout your essay. Weve all used a
VCR or DVD to fast forward through sections of a movie. Transition words do the same thing
for writers- they move us along to the important part of our story.
Input/Modeling:
1. Write the word transition on board. Trans means across or change.
2. Pass out transition word list
3. Have student look over the words
v4u4. Ask if students have any questions about the words
5. Can anybody give me an example of a transition word they have used as a writer? (call on
students)
6. Show sample of personal narrative and ask students to identify or add a transition word in the
narrative.
v4u7. On a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being completely comfortable and 1 you have no clue; show me one
of these numbers on your hand please.
Guided Practice/Independent Practice:
Today you can add some transition words to your personal narrative. Have students use the
transition word list out as they plan/draft their own narrative. Hand out students materials of
previous personal narrative. Allow students to draft and revise.
Closure/Motivation:
Have students reread their drafts and find the transition words they used. Have the students go
around the room and share one transition word they used. Transitions will help your reader move
through your piece.
Modifications/Adaptations:
Make sure all students are participating.
Try to involve many students throughout lesson for examples.
Evaluation:
Student
