Artifact Reflection

University of Wisconsin-Platteville
Title of Experience/Artifact: Coaching high school girls Junior Varsity basketball
Date Experience Completed: November 2011-March 2012
Description
I had the opportunity to teach a young group the skills of basketball, reaching goals, and what it takes to
be on a Varsity level team. My artifact I have shown is a practice lesson plan I used majority of the
season with my JV team. It has the fundamentals and skills that we did on a daily basis.
UW-Platteville Health Promotions Standard Alignment
My artifact aligns with the Health Promotion Standard Alignment 6, Communication. The health
promoter uses knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster
active inquiry, collaboration and supportive interaction. Even though this is something I dont intend to
do as a profession, this experience of coaching still taught me communication skills and supportive
interaction I need in my future endeavors and thus far. I also got the opportunity to create different
activities each day in my practices for the players to learn functional basics of basketball. Not only
would I teach them about offense plays, defense plays, shooting drills, but also for them to understand
that conditioning everyday during practice would be beneficial when playing in a game and also for their
everyday health.
Health and Physical Educations Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment
KSD3.d. Provides Feedback to Clients, The candidate can provide timely, high quality feedback that is
useful to the clients in their learning. My artifact best aligns with this ksd because I was able to make a
lesson plan for each practice, and then could provide any feedback needed for each fundamental we
did. I could work with the team as a whole, or break it down and work with each player one by one so
they were getting my full attention on what needed to be improved or what they did outstanding on.
What you learned about teaching/learning from this experience:
What I learned from this experience it takes a lot to communicate with a big group, especially teenage
girls. I learned that I need to teach and interact with each individual in this kind of group. Not everyone
is on the same physical level. It taught me to pursue each individual as my own personal client like I
would if I were personal training. I had to make sure each client had their own goals, as well as team
goals they wanted to achieve.
What you learned about yourself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience/artifact:
I learned that I did and can accomplish first time jobs like coaching when I didnt know what I was
getting myself into right away. I know now that there is a lot more involved with coaching a team or just
a separate individual than just giving them a ball and telling them to play. I can take what I taught my
team as well as what I showed myself in to my future goals and keep learning. This experience has
shown me that I am capable of being a great educator. I can use this experience to coach my future
clients/patients through each day when they dont feel motivated to keep going. Having the
opportunity to go through wins and losses with the team, gives me a better outlook on how it feels
when a future client doesnt think they are reaching their goals and just wants to give up.
