Objectives Instructional activities Assessments Materials
Accommodations/
Modifications
Compare and order
numbers on a number line.
Demonstrate comparison
of numbers using the
vocabulary and symbols
from the standard.
Individual pre-assessments are to be passed out to
each student. Read the questions aloud pausing between
questions to allow for students to answer.
State the objectives of the lesson. Today we are
going to figure out how to use number lines to compare
numbers. Im going to need your help with that in a
second! Were also going to learn some vocabulary
words and tricky symbols to use too.
Pass out index cards marked with various numbers (1-
30) using tens rods and ones randomly to half of the
students. Pass out number lines to others.
Create human number line. Have seated students add
shown numbers to their number lines.
Have two students from the number line step forward.
Have seated students show their answer to the greater
than or less than question asked using the popsicle
sticks. Fill out checklist.
Distribute the remaining index cards (1-20) randomly
to the seated students. Ask questions and fill out
checklist. Add numbers to our number line.
Review vocabulary (greater than, less than, equal to)
and symbols (>, =, <). Show how to alter the equal sign
through a think aloud.
Distribute paper number lines for students to show
their thinking during journal questions.
Seat students and complete an example problem
together in math journals with discussion. Have students
complete the remainder of the example problems.

Pre-assessment:
Students will individually
complete six questions for
the pre-assessment. This
will evaluate their
background knowledge of
the vocabulary (greater
than, less than, equal to)
and symbols (>, =, <).

Formative assessment:
A checklist can be marked
when incorrect answers
are given using the
popsicle sticks during the
human number lines.

Summative assessment:
Students will individually
complete questions given
in their math journals.
This will assess
knowledge of the
vocabulary (greater than,
less than, equal to), the
symbols (>, =, <), and
using a number line to
compare numbers.
