Childrens Cancer Persuasive Essay
Theres a fear that goes through you when you are told you have cancer. Its so hard in
the beginning to think about anything but your diagnosis. Its the first thing you think about every
morning"- Delores, Cancer Survivor. Cancer is probably one of the most life changing diseases
any child could have. It changes every day normal life to a hard struggle. Children who
experience cancer are usually devastated since their lives temporarily or possibly permanently
stop. Many of the hopes and ambitions that the children dreamed of will not be accomplished,
while their peers keep living their lives. Childrens Cancer is a very relevant and major concern
in today's culture.
Cancer today kills more children than any other disease; in fact it claims more lives
globally than HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, asthma, diabetes, and cystic fibrosis combined.
Unfortunately, the death toll from cancer is only going to grow. Each year, tens of millions of
people, including children, are diagnosed with cancer around the world, and more than half of
the patients eventually die from it. Cancer ranks the second most common cause of death
following cardiovascular diseases in most countries. Each year in the U.S. there are
approximately 13,400 children between the ages of birth and 19 years of age who are
diagnosed with cancer. About one in 300 boys and one in 333 girls will develop cancer before
their 20th birthday. Every school day 46 children are diagnosed. Cancer eradicates more lives
than any other disease, and will continue to be the number one cause of death.
Childhood Cancer scars many children and teenagers emotionally and physically. The
victim of cancer does not know what their future holds, and they often feel an overpowering
sense of fear and anxiety. When hearing the devastating, pivotal news of cancer, most kids feel

shock, guilt, anger, and even depression. After treatment which could consist of Chemotherapy,
Radiotherapy, Surgery, transplants or steroids, children will feel and act differently than their
typical behavior. Some kids will be aggressive with family, friends, and medical assistants; often
venting out their anger through the people close to them. Many kids will experience hair loss,
rapid weight loss or weight gain, growth changes, and prevention of participating in school, all
leading to a crushing emotion of insecurity. Friendships may slowly drift apart, affecting the
victims social life often making the victim feel isolated at a critical time in life when moral
support from friends and peers is imperative. Teenagers, especially, will feel like their lives have
been paused. Cancer does not stop to let you live your teenage years, or let you fulfill your
dreams. Teenagers with Cancer usually painfully watch as their friends advance by
accomplishing their future plans and aspirations and carve out their future life as an adult.
Childhood cancer destructs and cripples children and teenagers lives, making them feel
insecure and requiring them to live a life of grief.
Cancer not only affects the victim, but also family and friends of the child or teenager.
Living in a household with one family member, especially a child, having Cancer can be
stressful and extremely painful. Watching the ones you love the most suffer with Cancer can be
one of the worst events that could take place in a parents life. Sometimes, there seems to be
the feeling that the whole family has been turned upside down. Not only does the family have to
deal with the heartache accompanied with Cancer, but they also have to deal with modifications
that the family will undergo. Families will many times have problems communicating with each
other, and sometimes the roles in households may be switched which is often hard to adapt to.
Also money may be a problem, leading to the potential of financial issues
Childrens Cancer is a very significant and foremost concern in today's society. Cancer
emotionally, physically, and mentally scars the victim. Insecurity, isolation, fear, sadness, and
anger are often the main emotions that children and teenagers face. There are many
possibilities for supporting Cancer, but the most beneficial and advantageous solution is to

donate money to research organizations. In 2009, only 4% of the National Cancer Institutes
budget was used for pediatric funding. By donating money to organizations that are trying to find
a cure, there will be a greater chance of terminating childhood Cancer.
