Standard two: Know the content and how to teach it

The following are excerpts from EDLA309: Literacy Education 2; this

assessment task required me to design a teaching plan ready for classroom use
that successfully incorporated ICT.

Informed Rationale for Teaching Plans:
Looking at the AusVELS website, I noticed that in the six years children spend at primary school,
there is only a small section dedicated to a vital part of Australian History WWI I believe my
digital resource effectively manages to promote learning and keep the ideas and themes appropriate
for the age group. Instead of hiding our History from young Australians, I believe it is important to
remind them of the past.

Comment [M1]: In this lesson plan I
effectively incorporated ICT to teach an
aspect of literacy. Illustrating my
achievement of focus area 2.6 as I used the
appropriate technology to facilitate and
enhance student learning in the classroom,
showing I have the teaching strategies
necessary to successfully expand learning
opportunities for all students.
Comment [M2]: Discussed critically
here is my understanding of the potential of
digital resources for scaffolding learning. In
this instance the digital resource is being
used to scaffold the literacy learning of
students by encouraging them to make
connections between the text and their own
lives.
The following is an excerpt from EDLA204: Literacy Education 1; this
assessment task required me to write a rationale regarding a teaching plan I
had designed for a class of children with various literacy needs

For teachers to educate students about how to write texts, they are required to have an understanding
of, and use correctly, a variety of punctuation correctly
Similar to the artefact shown above, this artefact supports my achievement of focus area 2.2 as I have
shown how I have organised the content, in this case using punctuation correctly, into a sequence of
lessons.
It was a lesson designed on enhancing the thinking aloud that goes into deciding whether to use a
capital letter or full stops as it reveals to the child the way to solve similar problems in their own
writing. It was through the use of modelled writing that I was able to heighten the students
understanding of grammar and more specifically punctuation.
I chose the approach of modelled writing to begin the lesson as I know that modelled writing is a
simple but effective strategy for teaching the use of language conventions (education Department of
Western Australia, 1997, p.153). As the teacher in a modelled writing session I am able to take the
role of author and demonstrate the many aspects of the writing process and the child is able to see
how each challenge is confronted and met (Education Department of Western Australia, 1997, p.
153).

Comment [M3]: Demonstrated here is
my knowledge of the importance of
modelled writing as an effective teaching
strategy. This further supports my
achievement of focus area 2.5 as I have
shown I have a knowledge and
understanding regarding the teaching
approaches that can be used to monitor
students development of spoken and
written language.
This is an excerpt from EDMA103: Exploring Mathematics 1; this assessment
task required me to devise a self-improvement plan on a specific area of
mathematics.

Angle wheel this
was an activity I did
by myself to help
reintroduce me to the
concept of angles
Using the angle wheel I
created I could rotate one
circle on the other to make
angles of many different sizes
(see appendix 9). I began with
the basics 360
o
and 90
o
and
then made a range of angles
relating them to 90
o
. Starting
with a straight angle (180
o
),
a right angle (45
o
) and moving
to 1 right angles (135
o
).

The angle wheel activity is
one that I feel really enhanced
my learning as it was my first
real look at angles for a long
time. Using the angle wheel
allowed me to visually see the
different angles, many of
which I had forgotten. After
completing this activity I
realised I am a strong visual
learner. Being able to play and
create my own angles using
the wheel enhanced my
understanding as I was able to
see and create angles which
assisted in developing my
understanding.

Comment [M4]: Demonstrated here is
my knowledge and understanding of angles
in mathematics and an activity to scaffold
the learning of angles. Both of which
illustrate my alignment with focus areas 2.1
and 2.5 as I have shown how I have an
understanding of the mathematical content
and how it can be translated into a
classroom activity.
