The document provides design specifications for a heat exchanger competition being held by the PetrotechMITStudent Chapter. Participants must design and construct a heat exchanger that uses the heat from a chemical reaction to heat cold water. The heat exchanger must fit within a 30cmx30cmx40cm box and allow continuous water flow during a 4 minute run time. Teams will be judged based on achieving the greatest increase in water temperature and smallest difference between reaction and water temperatures.

Design and construct an Economical Heat Exchanger which takes out maximum heat out of a chemical reaction of your choice and use it for heating cold water. Design Specifications:- 1. Heat Exchanger should be semi-batch, i.e. a continuous flow of cold water should be provided, and the Reaction for the evolution of heat should be done as the time starts. 2. The time given for addition of reactants is 1min & 1min will be given for addition of water. 3. Your machine should fit into a box of 30cm*30cm*40 cm. 4. The entire machine cannot be moved during the run. It must be operated while kept on the table. 5. After the 4min of run 200 ml of water is to be collected for measuring T f.
6. Collection time of 200 ml of H 2 O is 30 sec. (Minimum 200 ml of H 2 O should be collected in 30 sec ) 7. Provisions for the thermometer should be provided at the inlet and outlet of the heat exchanger for the measurement of the cold water temperature. Also a provision for measurement of reactant/product temperature is to be provided. 8. The model must sustain the heat developed by the reaction and should not break down. 9. Tap water will be used as the source of cold water.2 Litre of tap water is provided to all. 10.The model must be sealed properly so that no liquid leaks out during competition. 11.Machine should have provision for entry and exit of cold water. 12.No external source of energy can be used. (battery) 13.Run time for each team will be 4 min.(1min for additions of Reactants + 1min for addition of Water + 2 min for running the experiment)
Judging:-
1. Initial temperature of the cold water is given say 27c = Ti 2. Final Temperature of the cold water = Tf 3. The Temperature of the reacting mixture =Tr
Points will be given on two basis 1. The greatest value of (Tf-Ti) 2. The least value of (Tr-Tf)
The team with the most points win. For any queries please write us at enquiry@petrovision.org or contact :- Pankaj Choudhary Mayank Kumar +91 9028321653 +91 8421807445
