ASSESSMENT

SUMMARY

INQUIRY STAGE DESCRIPTION PURPOSE
Lesson 1 Assessment
For Learning
AND
Assessment As
Learning

Evaluate, and reflect upon, the wonder
questions formed by students. Notice
students ability to identify their
wonderments and pose questions related
to the inquiry topic.
This assessment provides teachers with
insight into what students hope to learn.
This can be use to inform planning and
future teaching, ensuring that students
needs and interests are met. Furthermore,
this assessment provides students with
the opportunity to engage in higher order
thinking, reflect upon their knowledge and
learning, and be active participants in the
teaching and learning process.
Lesson 2 Assessment
For Learning
Work Samples - Can children identify
which images are living and which are
not? Which images/objects did they get
confused with?
Anecdotal notes - when presenting, are
children able to justify why or why not an
object should or should not be allocated
where it has been?
Lesson 3 Assessment
For Learning
Specifically, educators here will focus on
conducting observations and creating
anecdotal notes, reflecting upon how the
students are working collaboratively,
whether they are engaged, and whether
their contributions are informed, and have
been justified. Educators will use these
observations when encouraging the
students to engage in further group work.
(i.e. groups that did work, groups that
didnt, changes that may be beneficial).
Lesson 4 Assessment
For Learning
The Poster will be used to assess the
children. Are they able to explain how the
human life cycle works?
Anecdotal notes will also be used during
the discussion at the start of the lesson.
Note if children are able to articulate what
a life cycle is. If not are children able to
articulate to the teacher what they don't
understand and want more help with.
Lesson 5 Assessment As
Learning
Students here will be building towards
their final display to be presented within
the going-further stage, students here are
encouraged to take ownership of their
work when creating the venn-diagram.
Lesson 6 Assessment
For Learning
Educators will conduct observations and
write anecdotal notes specifically
focussing on the investigative practises of
their students. Teachers will observe how
the students interact with the technology
provided, and use quality questioning in
encouraging the students to engage with
this technology.
Lesson 7 Assessment Of
Learning
Work sample of Healesville sanctuary
map. Did the child manage to fill in all
unknown animal habitats?

Lesson 8

Assessment
For Learning
Teacher makes anecdotal notes of how
well students engage in the research
process. Notice sources utilised, their
appropriateness and students ability to
access and record relevant information.
This assessment aims to provide insight
into the students independent inquiry
skills, thus informing future planning.
Lesson 9 Assessment As
Learning
Students fill out a self-assessment rubric
which focuses on the affective aspect of
their learning. Criteria include: How easy
was it to find your information, Did you
understand what information you were
looking for, Did you like working in a
group, etc. Students are provided with a
rubric and given the opportunity to rank
each criteria in terms of a happy, neutral
or sad face. Students will reflect upon
their own learning and participation in the
self-inquiry process. This assessment with
provide teachers with an invaluable insight
into students disposition towards self-
inquiry and research. It will also highlight
areas of difficulty that need further
development in future inquiry units.
Lesson 10 Assessment Of
learning

Work samples of each childs plan for their
diorama will be used to assess if the
children have correctly used their new
knowledge to create the ideal habitat for
their chosen animal.

Work samples of the finished diorama will
be used to assess if children are able to
identify; using labels each element of their
animals habitat and then link this with
their fact sheet which will be presented
alongside the diorama.
Lesson 11 Assessment Of
learning
Use anecdotal notes to decipher if the
children have the ability to think beyond
what they already know/found to select a
new wonderment question to explore and
extend their current knowledge.

Further use anecdotal notes when
listening to children present their findings.
Note if children are able identify
Lesson 12 Assessment Of
learning
Video children when sharing their display.
Are they able to articulate to the viewer all
essential elements which their chosen
animal needs to survive in its habitat?
Are they able to answer prompting
questions being asked by the educator?
How can we be responsible?
Take anecdotal notes of what children
come up with. Are they able to justify their
answers with new learned information?
