FORM THREE CHAPTER 11 LINEAR EQUATIONS II

11.1 Linear Equations in Two Variables

Eg.1
State whether each of the following equations is a linear equation in two variables.
a)

b) 5p 9q = 4

Eg.2
In a post office, Halim spent RM 5 for x pieces of 30-sen stamps and y pieces of RM1 stamps.
Write a linear equation in two variables.

Eg.3
Given that 2x 3y = 11 , find
a) The value of x when y = -3
b) The value of y when x = 4

11.2 Simultaneous Linear Equations in Two Variables

Eg.4
By using the substitution method, solve the following simultaneous linear equations.
a) Y = 2x 3
6x + 5y = 1
b) X + 4y = 5
4x + 3y = -6

Eg.5
Use the elimination method to solve the following simultaneous linear equations.
a) 2x y = 5
4x + y = 13
b) 5x + 3y = -1
2x + 7y = 17

Eg.6
A school has a total of 50 teachers. The number of female teachers is four less than two times
the number of male teachers. Find the number of male teachers and females teachers in the
school.

Exercises:
1. By using the substitution method, solve the following simultaneous linear equations.
a) 2x + y = 4
Y = 1 x
b) X + 3y = 3
4y = x + 11
c) X + 6y = 2
3x + 8y = -4
d) 7x y = 9
9x 2y = 8

2. Use the elimination method to solve the following simultaneous linear equations.
a) H + 3k = 10
2h + k = 10
b) 2m + n = -1
3m + 4n = 11
c) 5p 2q = 13
4p + 3q = -8
d) 6u 7v = 37
9u 4v = 10

3. The sum of two numbers is 66. The larger number exceeds two times the smaller number by 3. Find the
two numbers.

4. In a concert, x tickets of price RM4 and y tickets of price RM 10 have been sold. If the total collection from
the 700 tickets sold is RM 300, find the values of x and y.
