OHIO RESIDENT EDUCATOR PROGRAM

Purpose: Resident Educators should use flexible grouping strategies, grouping and regrouping students
according to specific goals, learning activities, and individual needs. Groupings should be vary and include
opportunities for both homogeneous and mixed-ability groupings.

Directions:
1. Together, mentors and Resident Educators discuss the importance of flexible instructional grouping
and review the data identified in the Class Profile.
2. Resident Educators should complete the Inventory below, delineating one possible class grouping and
providing a rationale for this particular arrangement.
3. Following the activity for which this grouping was used, Resident Educators should add a reflective
statement regarding the efficacy of this particular instructional grouping.

INTENTIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL GROUPING INVENTORY
Resident Educator: Brina Thomas Date Completed: 12/23/13
Grade Level/Subject Area: 3/4 Reading
Rationale for this Grouping: Students are groups using their i-ready data. Students are then given
instruction according to what group they fall into. 3rd Grade and 4th grade are in different groups
for reading to insure that each grade level is getting skills that they need.

Reflection on Efficacy of this Grouping:

Groups change each nine weeks, this way I can continue to give the students what they need.
Students are grouped according to like learning needs. Grouping the students this way has really
helped the students growth. I have seen more of my advanced students growing because they are
not held back by other students who are not ready for the next level. Most of the students have
shown over a years worth of growth, only one student has gone down a significant amount. I believe
that ability grouping for lesson instruction has been a huge success in my class this year. I would love
to use this same strategy to group students for math next year.
