325-98, a $601 billion military budget for fiscal
2015 that includes $79 billion for overseas
actions and funds a 1.8 percent pay raise for
troops. A yes vote backed a bill (HR 4435) in
which one of every six dollars goes to active-
duty and retiree healthcare.

Minimum Wage, Equal Pay: The House
defeated, 194-227, a Democratic bid to
prohibit contracts under HR 4435 (above) to
companies that fail to pay a minimum wage of
$10.10 per hour or provide pay equity
between male and female employees. A yes

Climate-Change Spending: The House
voted, 231-192, to prohibit the Department of
Defense from spending any of its 2015
budget on programs that address climate
change. A yes vote was to add the prohibition
to HR 4435 (above) over arguments that
climate change affects national security.

Indefinite Detention: The House refused,
191-230, to end authority granted to
presidents after 9/11 to indefinitely detain
terrorist suspects in U.S. military custody
rather than assign them to the civilian
criminal-justice system. A yes vote was to

Guantanamo Bay Prison: The House
defeated, 177-247, a bid to close the U.S.
prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and move
its inmates to super-max prisons in the U.S.
or, if they are seen as unthreatening, to
another country. A yes vote was to close the
prison as part of HR 4435 (above).

Federal Reserve Confirmation: Voting 68
-27, the Senate confirmed Stanley Fischer,
70, as vice chairman of the Federal Reserve
System. He will take over a 14-year term that
became vacant when Janet Yellen was
confirmed in January as Fed chair. A yes vote
was to confirm Fischer.
In the week of May 26, the House will debate the Intelligence and
State-Justice-Commerce budgets for fiscal 2015. The Senate will be in
Memorial Day recess until the week of June 2.
