Thesis: Although plagiarism has terrible statistics and appalling honor cases, there are still ways

to plagiarism in colleges.
I. Statistics show that plagiarism has spread across America for several years.
A. Today, cheating is not just a concern for below average students, but to overachieving
college students as well.
1. Cheating no longer carries the stigma that it used to.(Current Cheating

a. Less social approval coupled with increased competition for admission
into universities and graduate schools has made students more willing to
do whatever it takes to get the A.(Current Cheating Statistics)
b. Grades, rather than education, have become the major focus of many

2. Teachers and students believe every student will inevitably cheat, while few
college sees that as a problem.
a. Seventy-three percent of graduate students and teachers are in agreement

B. Donald McCabe conducted a three-year survey that revealed the statistics of academic
misconduct by students.

2. These results show how the temptation of cheating has affected our nations
colleges.

II. Both students and teachers alike, from any college, can be guilty of academic
misconduct.

A. In the spring of 2012, 125 undergraduates at Harvard University were accused of
cheating on a final exam after the professor found many similarities in

1. This has become has become a problem thats spread across the country

III. After being overlooked for years, there are now ways to prevent Honor Code violations.
A. Academic integrity is crucial to Emory University.(Jason Ciejka)
1. Due to many violations occurring the Honor Code has seemed to have lost his
purpose. (Jason Ciejka)
2. Emory Honor Council found a way to make the Honor Code visible and educate
students with academic integrity.
B. Over the past month, a technology-based system with remote proctoring has reduced the
number of students cheating on online finals.(Michael London)
1. Colleges in 10 states have shown that less than one percent were caught

2. While no system, no matter how sophisticated, can catch everything, our data
demonstrates that an online proctoring is very effective as a deterrent. (Michael
