Distributive property I
Distributive Prop. 5(f + 10) = 55

The distributive property dened: the product of a number and a

sum is equal to the sum of the individual products and addends and
the numbers.
The basics: First you multiply (5 x f = 5f) + (5 x 10= 50) (5f +50= 55)
After: 5f+50=55 next solve like an equation subtract 50 from both sides of the equation, after
you get 5 you have 5f=5 divide ve from both sides and you end up with f=1 (5f + 50=
55)
- 50 = -50
0 = 5
5f = 5
5/5 = 5/5
f = 1

Associative Property I
Associative Prop of add (6+x) +16= 6+(x+16)
Basics: The associative prop is basically changing the parenthesis in
the equation, while still having having an equal equation.
The answer: The answer to this problem is innitive EXAMPLE:
say x=1 (6+1)+16=6+(1+16) but sides of the equation equal 23
concluding x can be any number.
Associative Prop of multiplication (6 x r) x 16= 6 x (r x 16)
Just like the associative prop of add the associative prop of
multiplication works the same way all you doing is changing around
the parenthesis and the answer is innitive

Commutative Property I
Commutative prop of add: 6+r+16=16+r+6
Basics: All your doing in this property is switching the order of the
numbers in the equation while still having it be equal
The answer for (r) is innitive EXAMPLE: 6+5+16=16+5+6 both equal
27
Commutative prop of multiplication: 6 x r x 16= 16 x r x 6
Just like the commutative prop of add all your doing is switching the
order of numbers and the answer is innitive

II Simplify 4(7x - 3) + 2x
4(7x -3) + 2x First: Distribute 4(7x - 3) by
multiplying 4 x 7x which equals 28x next
multiply 4 x 3 which equals 12 and you should
end up with 28x - 12, 28x - 12 + 2x
Next combine like terms 28x - 12 + 2x, 28x +
2x = 30x
30x -12 this is what you should have come up
with this is the simplest form

III Solve 7x-10-9x= -13
First combine like terms 7x-10-9x= -13 7x-9x= -2x, subtract 7x from
9x and get -2x
After: -2x-10= -13 no get rid of -10 by adding a positive 10, Do this to
both sides of the equation -2x-10= -13
( +10= +10 )
Now you have -2x= -13 +10 which equals -3, -2x= -3 next divide -2 on
both sides of the equation leaving x alone -2x = -3
-2/-2 x = -3/-2
x = .67

IV Solve 5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6
5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6 First: change the denominators to 6
x/3 multiply 3 x 2 and X x 2 (x2/6) change 1/2 by multiplying 2x3
and 1x3 (3/6)
5x/6 + x2/6 - 3/6 = 11/6, combine like terms add 5x/6 + 2x/6= 7x/6
7x/6 - 3/6 = 11/6 now to get rid of -3/6 add 3/6 to both sides of the
equation, 7x/6 - 3/6 = 11/6
( +3/6 = +3/6
7x/6 = 14/6 since both denominators are the same
you can cross them out, 7x= 14 now divide both sides by fourteen
7/7 = 14/7
x = 2

V Solve and Graph 2!x/-5
2 !x/-5 First get rid of -5 by multiplying -5 to both sides
2 x -5 " -5 x-5 keep in mind the sign has change because whenever you multiply or
divide an negative to both the sides the sign will change, 2 x -5 " x/-5 x-5
-10 " x
When you would go to graph this you would show that x is less than -10 therefore
the arrow would be going farther negative and away from the -10 , and when you
graph you make a number line and above the number you have either an open or a
closed circle to show if it can equal the num or not and then you draw the arrow in
either direction depending on the problem, in this case the circle would be closed.

VI Solve -4x + 4 " -8
-4x + 4 ! -8 First subtract 4 from both sides of the equation
- 4 ! -4
-4x ! -12 now divide -4 from both sides of the equation
-4/-4 x ! -12/-4
x ! 3
keep in mind the sign changed because whenever you multiply or divide
a negative you switch the sign, x is at most 3 to graph this you would
show the arrow moving negatively away from 3 closer to the zero.When
you graph you make a number line and above the number you have either an open
or a closed circle to show if it can equal the num or not and then you draw the
arrow in either direction depending on the problem, in this case the circle would be
closed.

VII Open and Closed Circles
An open circle means less than or
greater than this number
A closed circle means at most or at least
this number

VIII Solve Inequality word problems
Chris wants to buy a bike that cots $160. If she saves $12 each week, what is the
fewest number of weeks she must save in order to buy the bike
Inequality: $160 ! w x 12 First we have to get rid of 12 by dividing it on both sides
$160/12 ! w 12/12
13.333 ! w
It asks what the fewest number of weeks it must take for her to save to buy the bike,
and you cant say 13.333 weeks so the fewest number of weeks it will take her is 14
weeks.

VIII Solve Inequality word problems
Mark worked on math homework less than 1/3 the amount of time that his brother
did. He spent 25 mins on his math homework than how much time did his brother
spend.
Inequality: 25 ! b x 1/3, to get rid of 1/3 you must divide 1/3 on both sides
25/1/3 ! b / 1/3 After that you have to divide 25 by 1/3
75 ! b In the end the brother at least spent 75 mins

VIII Solve Inequality word problems
One this of a number, decreased by 36 is at most 22. Find the number
First: Get rid of -36 by adding it on both sides
1/3 x f - 36! 22
+36!+36
1/3 x f! 58 Now divide 1/3 on both sides
/1/3 f! 58/1/3
f! 174 THE NUMBER IS AT MOST 174
