Practical Seed priming
Aims
1. To test whether priming seeds affects a) rate of germination b) spread of
germination date.
2. To test whether the concentration of polyethylene glycol solution used
affects germination date / rate.
Method
A. Week 1
In groups, select a seed type.
Count seeds into petri dishes
3 treatments no soak, soak in 20% PEG4000, soak in 40% PEG4000
Seeds should not be completely covered with the solution.
B. Week 2
Sow seeds ingrowing medium in seed trays in glasshouse.
C. Check regularly for germination (or emergence) e.g. Friday, Monday,
Thursday.
Count number emerged on each inspection.
