Today we will be looking at a new text, a newspaper article, to see if
we can find the representation of Australian values in the text

LEARNING OBJECTIVE (LO):
To be able to recognise and discuss Australian values in a newspaper
article text.
TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. 11:30 Mark roll What am I? Plenary activity (15mins) Put 5 statements on the board about Australian values. Students to write and
order them, in preference/importance: personal opinion! (relates to Assessment task Q2)
Mateship is more important than toughness
Peacefulness is more important that being easy-going
Being Australian is mostly about being tanned and liking the beach
Equality under the law is very important, more important than equality for men and women
2. 11:45 Introduce the Alex McKinnon article (45mins)
Students read out sections of the article. Highlight idioms, references to Australian values.
Create a list of the Australian values in the text and the characters in the text, similar deconstruction as table done for TWTWB
3. 12:30 Speech preparation: Model! Students use the key points from the table to create a TEEL paragraph for this article.
