Grade 2 Homework (Week 33):

Distributed: Friday, June 6th Due: Friday, June 13th

1. Mad Minutes Please continue to practice your Mad Minutes. Ask your mom or dad to copy the
2-sided division sheets which your teacher gave you. Practice a different Mad Minute sheet about 2-
4 times per week. Lets master our Division facts for speed and accuracy.
2. Spelling: Go to the Spelling City Website at: http://www.spellingcity.com/grade2bifs/
Then click on your Spelling List. Enjoy all of the fun games and activities!
3. Literacy: Read your leveled reading book aloud to your parents for 15-20 minutes per night or until
you complete your book. Remember to have your parents sign the form. Please make sure to read 5-
7 nights per week.
4. PYP: explore the following cool and interactive website for a total of 45 minutes (3 nights 15 minutes per
night; 4 nights 12 minutes per time; etc.) during the week: http://www.recyclezone.org.uk/
5. PYP: with the poster your teacher gave you, make a Mind Map with one of the following key phrases in the
center of the page (global warming; recycling; reducing; reusing; pollution; compost; deforestation; poaching;
natural resources; renewable resources; non-renewable resources; energy; fossil fuels; or a choice of your own
related to our unit). Your mind map should include the following: words, pictures, phrases, captions, arrows or
lines, labels, connections, your name, and it should be colorful.
Try to make multiple connections for one idea or phrase such as global warming can be connected to rising sea
levels. Then, rising sea levels can be connected to floods by arrows with an explanation along the arrows, but
rising sea levels can also be connected to people having to move away from the coast and loss of habitat (coastal
erosion) with more arrows or lines. Global warming could be connected to the world getting warmer, which
could be connected to melting glaciers with arrows, squiggly lines, etc. Melting glaciers can be connected to
polar bears losing their habitat. Then, polar bears losing their habitat can be connected to people having to
move away from the coast (which was mentioned before). A good mind map has connections all over the
poster. Little pictures or diagrams can sketched or even printed next to the bubbles to show each childs
thinking skills and connections. Please go to google images and type in: Mind Maps for more examples, but
the homeroom teachers will also share an example in class on Friday or Monday.
Optional Bonus Homework:
Math: Make a video clip teaching your classmates how to divide items into equal groups. Such as having 24 marbles and
putting them into 4 circles and showing that 6 are in each circle at the end. Please be sure to use props.
PYP/Literacy: Complete more than 5 journal entries for the journal assignment listed above. Write 1-2 page journal
entries. Record sketches and pictures with captions in your environmental journal.
Weebly websites: Add new entries to your personal or fun page using the following ideas: video clips, audio
clips, photos, slideshows, journal entries, poems, letters, stories, etc.
Literacy: Use Story Bird to write another story and share with your classmates on the Smartboard.
PYP/Literacy: Who would you like to sit with as your table partner for the last 2 weeks of school? Write a full page
persuasive essay on why you think you and this friend would work well together. Start off with a topic sentence and
specific supporting details. If your written piece convinces the class, then you can sit next to this friend for the final two
weeks of school. Please check with your friend first before you write it and ask them if its okay for you to write about
how you two will work well together.
