Multi-Site Energy Management for the

Smart Grid
Jonathan Histed, MS, MBA.

Novar a division of Honeywell International,
Inc., Independence, OH

The multi-site commercial market including
retail, restaurants, grocery stores, theaters
and bank branches represents an estimated
12% of US peak load. Intensely cost
conscious and ever-seeking economies of
scale, multi-site chains offer a unique
opportunity to improve energy efficiency
and reduce consumption through automated
demand response programs. That same
bottom line laser focus also creates
challenges requiring solutions that provide
multiple layers of control and visibility and
high levels of security, while driving shed
strategies that do not impact day-to-day
operations and sales revenue.

A typical multi-site business consists of
hundreds or potentially thousands of similar
buildings located across the United States.
In most cases, these facilities have no on-site
support for energy or facilities management
and instead rely of small staffs at corporate
headquarters. Energy management and
control systems in this environment consist
of both hardware at each site to control
specific equipment and software at
headquarters to help manage conditions
across all sites. Communications between
these locations and outside the corporate
network must be highly secure and
demarcated from point-of-sale and other
trusted networks. Additionally, adjustments
to the operating condition of various facility
systems must happen with consideration for
a variety of business rules and constraints.
Incorporating demand response into such an
environment requires a solution that is fully
integrated with and controlled by the
existing energy management system.

This presentation will review the multi-site
market and discuss the potential for
implementation of behind the meter Smart
Grid solutions with a specific focus on
integrated energy efficiency and demand
response (EE+DR). An approach to
managing the data communications and
security needs of multi-site businesses will
be discussed, and a case study will be
presented showing the results of an EE+DR
implementation of OpenADR.
