When the rainforest animals look down at the water, expecting to see a reection, all they see is darkness because of the millions of rocks that cover the pond oor. The river that leads up to the waterfall comes from a small lake that is rapidly getting drained out. Un- der the waterfall there is a small cave with stalac- tites, that very much look like icicles. The weather in the rainfor- est is unbearably hot. If you would look down from the clouds, all you would see would be vege- tation, water and rocks. Vegetables are very scarce and the civilization of Soofer Falls would rely on fruit and animals. Sooner or later animals would go into extinction and the Soofer falls colony would be left with only fruit and a no Human Changes to the Land 5 The crazy jungle of Soofer falls Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 protein based diet. The people of Soofer falls would slowly die out. Even if a civilization found a piece of land to use it would be very hard to grow crops because of the alight amount of sun- light that shines on Soofer Falls. The water that ows in the waterfall is very dirty and could con- tain many dis- eases. This would be a very big problem for a civilization. The people would have to some how lter the water so that it would be safe to drink. They would probably have to store water by making watersheds, but that is risky because some of the animals might swim in the water and contaminate it. A tough task that the people would have to face is a certain area to build a shelter. That is a hard decision because there is a dan- ger of poisonous snakes and spiders and other creatures that could harm a civilization while they are sleeping. If it were going to rain, (which happens a lot) the rain- fall would not hit the roof as hard if trees covered them. The civilization of Soofer Falls would strug- gle a lot in this rainforest. Part II - Proposed Solutions 6 This is a image of a modication that which Soofer Falls would use Image 1.2 Reservoir Floating Gardens Image 1.3 Floating Gardens Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 In order for a civiliza- tion to thrive, it had to be able to modify its environment so that it can develop a stable reliable food supply. An environ- mental modication is any change that a being(s) makes to the physi- cal environment to better suit its needs. For exam- ple, slashing and burning a forest so that a civiliza- tion has at land for farming. Making two levies so that the lake would not overow. A civilization that cannot transform and modify its environment to t there basic needs will not thrive and prosper. .Soofer Falls is located in a rainforest which pro- vides little to none land to plant food and crops. To x this problem the people of Soofer Falls could make oating gardens in the lake and also use the technique of slash and burn to make open land. Then the land would be cleared and there would be area to plant crops. This would give the Soofer Falls civilization a great amount of food available. 2.The water that ows through the waterfall may contain many diseases so the people of Soofer Falls would not be able to drink out of the lake. The civilization would make very high water sheds so that the rain would ll up the water- sheds. (Arabs Frey 77-80) They would be so high, that animals would not be able to access the water. This would give them an unlimited amount of wa- ter due to the good amount of rainfall that happens each day. 3. Many poisonous animals are in the rainforest, which means you have to be careful where you set- 7 Poisonous red dart frog contaminated waterfall Image 1.5 Poisonous frog Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 tle. The civilization would have to make a shelter is up above the trees so that animals would not be able to get to the people while they are sleeping. There is a danger of rain damaging the thatched roof that the civilization would make, so they would have to make there houses under trees so that the rainfall wouldnt be as powerful hitting the roofs. It is a tough decision to make on where you locate your home. 8 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from everything you have. CHAPTER 2 9 Law and Government - Gerald R. Ford Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 SECTION 1 Lessons on Democracy In ancient Athens, the democracy let everyone have an opinion. As Frey states, Athens became a direct democracy around 500 B.C.E. Unlike mod- ern democracies, Athens allowed only free men to be citizens. (261) Every citizen could take part in cities government. A group called the council of 500 met every day. In addition, the Assembly met This is a illustration of a Roman senate gathering. Maintaining Civil Order 10 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 on a hill every 10 days. At least 6,000 citizens had to present for a meeting to take place. As Frey states, The assembly debated and voted on laws proposed by the Council. Every citizen had the right to speak at Assembly meetings.(261) If a citi- zen did not come to the meeting, they would be dragged to the assembly with a red rope. This is the same method U.S.A uses too (But not with a red rope, they would just re that person from there job). Everyone has a chance to speak up, freedom of speech, no matter who you are. Overall Athens didnt want just one ruler; they wanted their whole civilization to have a voice. An important lesson to learn from Sparta is age re- quirement. For example, if kids were running the government, Sparta would be chaotic and unor- ganized because the kids would not have any wis- dom nor knowledge for running a government. As Frey states, To be elected into the Council of Elders, you have to be 60 years or older and serve for life. (265) The council of elders held the real power in Sparta. As Frey states, It prepared laws for the Assembly to vote on, and it had the power to stop any laws passed by the assembly that the council members didnt like. (265) The Assembly didnt have much power; basically they made laws for the council of Elders to really submit them to the public. 11 This is a drawing of a Assembly in Rome. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 An important lesson to learn from Rome is that everyone should have the same rights no matter what. If not there will be a revolt. An example of this is when the plebeians stopped working and camped out until they got more rights. Same as the Bart strike, when the workers stopped doing their job for more money. The plebeians had to ght for what they wanted. As Frey states, They began to demand more political rights. The strug- gle between the plebeians and the patricians were known as the Conict of orders, or conict be- tween the classes. (320) They hated each other be- cause the patricians (5% of Rome) had all the power, and the plebeians (95% of Rome) had no power. The Plebeians revolt led to a major change in Roman government. As Frey states, The patri- cians agreed to let the plebeians elect ofcials called Tribunes of Plebs. The tribunes spoke for the plebeians to the senate and the consuls.(320) The plebeians nal gained some political rights, but they still had less than the patricians. Over the next 200 years the plebeians protested till they had equal political rights. As Frey states, First, they demanded that the laws be written down. That way, the patricians couldnt change them at will. The laws were written down on tablets called the Twelve Tables. (320) After 200 years of struggle, the plebeians had won their ght equally. 12 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 Code of Laws Several major threats that Soofer Falls was suffering from were natural, humanly and many oth- ers. Having laws helped the civili- zation of Soofer Falls to draw a line so that the civilization didnt get out of hand. Laws show people what the limit is to everything and what the consequence is for doing something one is not supposed to do. 1. If one murders someone else, the persons toes, ngers, and hair will be cut off and a symbol of shame will be tattooed onto the citizens head. This person will be thrown in jail for life. 2. If one steals, he/she will be brought to court, and if it is a big robbery, he/she will spend a large amount of years in jail, if it is a minor robbery, fewer years in jail. (At least on year). 3. If a single person wants to immigrate into Soofer Falls, he/she must pay a large amount of shil- lings; if a family wants to live here, they must pay triple the ne of a single person. If not you may not come in. 4. Citizens must have an I.D that says that then are allowed to be armed. To get an I.D you must be in the security department or the army. Also you could have an I.D if you are a hunter, but you must past a test to become one. If not carrying an I.D and you are armed, you are kicked out of the civiliza- tion. 13 This is the Code of Hammurabi. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wi Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 5. You must ask the government for permission to modify the environment, if one does not ask, he/she will pay a big ne and the criminals whole house will be taken down. 6. If one wants to live in Soofer Falls, they must work 6 days a week and be productive. Either at their own house or at a workplace. The laws must be obeyed for our civilization to be successful. We are trying to get the message to our citizens that violent crime is unacceptable. There are very bad consequences for doing such a thing. It is not worth the risk. As for stealing, we hope this does not happen a lot. Whoever wants to live in Soofer Falls, must be able to get food and sup- plies on their own. We want our civilization to represent power and wealth so in order to immi- grate into my civilization you must pay. If you are able to pay the amount of money that means that you are wealthy. Requiring every citizen wealthy, there will be no ghts between the poor and the rich. When the new citizens come in they pay the shillings to the government. The government uses the money to keep the civilization clean and to keep making the surrounding wall bigger and sturdier. The safer Soofer Falls gets, the more sur- rounding successful it gets. By making every armed man or women wear an I.D, this makes the citizens feel safer when they see people armed. It is important to Soofer Falls to make everyone feel safe about where they are living. Lastly, Soofer 14 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 Falls is a very big yet there are many people living inside the walls. We would like everyone to have the same type of house but maybe with a few modications. But most importantly you must ask before you do so. This is very important for any civilization. We want Soofer Falls to grow and by making many modi- cations it could take up too much space. The law of theft in- spired me to make my law because it shows that we mean business and dont try any- thing funny or else you will get killed. The law is very similar to his. We put the victim in jail but he killed the victim right away. I feel like criminals should suffer and not take the easy way out. Political Leadership Lessons from Julius Caesar Political lessons that Soofer Falls have learned from Julius Caesars rule are to make the citizens happy, continuing to expand and grow the wealth of a civilization, making everyone feel equal and happy. For example, as Frey states, To keep the poor happy, he staged gladiator contests they could watch for free. (Frey 17) This shows how much he cared for the citizens of Rome. He also limited the amount of slaves people could own so that poor people could nd better jobs. 15 This shows how important he was to Rome Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 To add on to that he reduced taxes and made tax collections fairer. By doing this more people wanted to come to Rome because of the low tax rate. Caesar was smart by doing this. Because his civilization grew, he actually made more money than before because there were more people living there, but just paying slightly less taxes. As Frey states, The aristocrats of Rome and many sena- tors feared that the republican government would never be restored and Caesar would hand down his leadership to an heir. He was warned by con- spiracy, but Caesar chose to ignore. (Frey 170) Soofer Falls learned from Caesars mistake to al- ways come prepared and dont ignore what is warned against you. My government is always prepared for a murder and is always making sure everyone is happy with what is going on. We have weekly meetings making sure that everyone doesnt have a problem with how our civilization is being ran. Political Leadership of Augustus Caesar The civilization of learned that a good leader is one who keeps peace. Augustus was that type of leader. One of his main priorities was to prevent civil wars from happening. Civil wars are one of the This is a statue of augustus Caesar http://www.alloftimeonline.com/A ugustusCaesar.jpg 16 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 worst things that could happen to Soofer Falls be- cause all the hard work go down the drain be- cause of the war. Once a civil war is started it is very hard to stop. Augustus thought of a way to prevent this from happening. First, he gained alle- giance from Roman senators, and then he made soldiers swear allegiance to him, not the senate. This helped him solve his problem because he knew the soldiers were now on his side. To get all the citizens on his side, he had to improve the quality of life and safety for the people of Rome. I think this is very important to Soofer Falls be- cause Soofer Falls wants everyone to feel like their home is safe and there is nothing to be worried about. Caesar established a police and re depart- ment to make sure everything was in hand and not to crazy. By including this into a civilization, the leader worries less about keeping the civiliza- tion straight, and it also makes the citizens feel safer. According to Mrs. Lomaxs power point, Augustus restored forums, and built temples so that the quality of Rome would be the best it could be. This makes a civilization feel prouder about their work and city, and it gives them moti- vation to keep doing what they are doing. Sooner or later Augustus knew that he needed Rome to be more efcient. First, he built new roads to im- prove communication and trade. Second, he or- dered a census to count people in the empire so tax collection would be more efcient. By using Caesars methods to speed up the efciency of a civilization, it makes Soofer Falls always having 17 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 something to do because there is no time for sit- ting around. If Soofer Falls follows Augustuss ideas, my civilization will be one of the most peaceful places in the world. The Decline of the Western Roman Empire The Western Roman Empire had many political and social problems, but perhaps the biggest prob- lem was trying to guard the perimeters of Rome. For Soofer Falls not to make the same mistake Western Rome did, my civilization will build a wall that will surround Soofer Falls. By doing this, the guards dont have to watch over too much land. Checkpoints will be located about every kilo- meter so that the guards make sure no one is try- ing to brake in. By putting fewer guards on the pe- rimeter of Soofer Falls, there is money left to pay the guards in the interior of the civilization. Since the Romans owned so much land, it was very hard for them to guard all of it. Also, a big disad- vantage from having so much land is taking car and clean- ing the streets of Rome. Rome couldnt afford to keep the civilization clean, guard their citizens or even make job opportunities for the poor. As Frey states, The huge size of the empire made it hard to defend. It sometimes took weeks for leaders to communicate with the generals. (Frey 7-8). Soofer Falls strategies would be, if they had too 18 This shows the decline of Western Rome Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 much land, they would sell a quarter of their land, and make a lot of money doing that. By having less land, the civilization would not have to take care of as much land, and they would have money to pay for Soofer Falls to keep clean. It is a win, win. 19 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 All the religions of the world, while they may differ in other respects, unitedly proclaim that nothing lives in this world but Truth. - Mahatma Gandhi CHAPTER 3 20 Belief Systems Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 SECTION 1 Utopia Soofer Falls What would it be like if the world didnt have belief systems and moral values? There would be no di- rections to tell between right and wrong. This would cause chaos be- cause the citizens will do whatever they wanted with no limits and this Imapct of Belief Systems 21 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 would cause the civilization to crumble. With a be- lief system, the citizens of Soofer Falls will be able to have some limits and not go too crazy. For ex- ample, in ancient western Rome, they started to decline because the territory started getting bigger and bigger and they did not have a limit of how much land they can control. They kept conquer- ing and conquering more land, so that when they were nished they werent able to take care for all of the land. When that happens, there are not enough security and other civilizations can take over much of you land. The result of this happening is that Rome could have just sold the land and made a lot of money, but instead the enemy got the land for free. Soofer Falls will have a belief system for sure, because without one, our civilization will not be able to thrive and protect our citizens. In order to better understand the importance of belief systems within a civilization and how they can inuence the actions and decisions of a people, please consider the fol- lowing moral dilemma: A Callous Passerby Roger Smith, a skillful swimmer, is out for a lei- surely stroll. During the course of his walk he 22 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 passes by a deserted pier from which a teenage boy who apparently cannot swim has fallen into the water. The boy is screaming desperately for help. Smith recognizes that there is absolutely no danger to him if he jumps in to save the boy; he could easily succeed if he tried. Nevertheless, he chooses to ignore the boy's cries. "Why should I in- convenience myself for this kid," Smith says to himself, and passes on. If Roger Smith were a Hindu, he would have thought differently. Hindus think that if one lived well, was kind and had no regrets, in the next life, this person would be in a higher caste. As Frey states, If people lived well, they might be born into a higher class in their next life. If he were a Hindu, Roger would have jumped into the water and saved the child so that in his next life he would be in a higher caste. Roger Smith decided not to, and as a Hindu, that would have been a bad decision and would lead to bad karma. This would be not wise because as Frey states, If they live badly, they could expect to be reborn in their next life. (149). Roger might even be reborn as an animal. Also, by Roger jumping in and trying to save the child, he is risking his life. And if Roger Smith dies trying to save the child, he might leave his family devastated, and his wife lonely with no one by her side, yet he would have good karma. 23 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 Overall, the right decision is to jump in and try to save the child. If Roger Smith were a Buddhist, he would have a moral obligation to save the child. As the Eight- fold Path states, Live a life of selessness, love and nonviolence(8). Roger Smith was being self- ish by saying that he doesnt want to ruin his day for saving the child. He only thought about him- self not about the kid who was about to maybe drown. The Eightfold Path also states, Do not kill, steal, or lie. Be honest Roger would be techni- cally killing the boy by not jumping in and trying to save him. He also might lie and say that he never saw a child drowning and that would be against the Eightfold Path. Either way he should jump in and save the child. Roger Smith wasnt a very wise man to just ignore the child. As part of Confucianism, Roger would not be following Confuciuss ways of teaching. As Frey states, Confucius taught, Do not do to oth- ers what you would not want done to you.(8) Roger walked by the child, not feeling empathy for the child. He only had to ask, what if I was in that situation, would I want someone just to walk by me, or try to help me? If Roger Smith had kids or was going to have kids and some how his children nd out what happened, that would be setting a bad example for his children. As Frey states, In return, those with authority such as rul- 24 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 ers, fathers, husbands, and older siblings, must set a good example. If Roger Smith were a Confu- cian, he should have at least called for help or jumped in and tried to save the child who was drowning. Roger Smith, a great swimmer, was walking and saw a kid drowning and just walked past him. First off, he should have at least called the police, or helped guide the kid how to get out. He didnt and just pretended to not see the child. This was just a bad decision in every way, he is going to have bad Karma and in his next life he is going to be in a lower caste. If the kid drowns, Roger will always have the thought of killing a child. He will regret this no matter what. Samid The Great pyramid of Giza inuenced Soofer Falls amazing design of the Samid. Soofer Falls Samid honors the afterlife of every citizen. Lo- cated in the pyramid are three temples. Respect is very important to the civilization; when some one passs away, we must honor him/her with much respect. With respect comes responsibility; Soofer 25 The Great Pyramid of Samid Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 Falls is responsible to bury every citizen no matter what. Also like the Samid, the Great pyramid of Giza has three temples, called the kings chamber, Queens chamber, and the subterranean chamber. Unlike my civilization, the Egyptians only honored three people. As National Geographic states, The Great Pyramid was the centerpiece of an elaborate com- plex, which included several small pyramids, ve boat pits, a mortuary temple, a causeway, a valley temple, and many at-roofed tombs for ofcials and some members of the royal family. Although the design of the Samid is very much alike the Great Pyramid of Giza, Egyptians worshipped one family, and us Sooferians believe that our whole community is one family. Another moral value that Soofer Falls follows is Health. The fami- lies of the dead people want to feel good about where there loved one is going to be treated. It wont be healthy for families see their family mem- ber just thrown into a hole. They want to make sure there loved one is going to be in good hands. Soofer Falls needs to know that the Samid is a very sacred and valuable place in my civilization. Without it there would be no place to pray or burry there loved ones. The Samid gives an oppor- tunity for citizens to connect with the dead and pray for them. The main goal for Soofer Falls is to be happy; for this to be successful we must be re- spectful to each other. If we have respect, responsi- 26 The Great Pyramid of Giza Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 bility, and health, we will become a very powerful civilization Coat of Arms My symbols repre- sent night, day, light, and sadness. Grey represents the cir- cle of life, from birth, to death. These colors repre- sent the skies. The skies communicate to people to tell them what type of day it is going to be. Role of the Church The church had the power and resources to con- vince people of what was right or wrong and also tell them what to do. The church was the center of medieval life. They helped everything stay in or- der and made sure everyone stayed healthy and happy. The church gained ten percent of every- ones earnings, so they had food and shelter for the poor. This made the church a good place for people to seek refuge and have some food that they could not afford it. They built the rst univer- sities in Western Europe and this helped people learn how to read and write better. But the church leaders somewhat regretted building these univer- sities and letting people study writers who might 27 This is a picture of my Coat of Arms Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 lead to people questioning the churchs teachings. The church had power over most people. As Frey states, The church taught people who gained salvation, or entry into heaven and eternal life by following the churchs teachings and living a moral life.(34) To believers, hell was a real and terrifying place. Thats why the people would do anything to get into heaven. As Frey states, At times the churchs power brought it into conict with European monarchs. One key struggle in- volved Pope Gregory VII and Henry IV, the Holy Roman emperor(32). The pope threw out henry, and he lost his salvation. He waited for 3 days out- side in the cold to gain back his salvation. This shows that even the emperor obeyed the church. The reason why the emperor and many other peo- ple obeyed the church was because they were scared that they wouldnt make it to heaven. They also thought more about how there life of chaos right now was worth it, because they will gain sal- vation for eternity. This is why the church had the power to convince people of what is right or wrong. 28 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 At all times, think like a writer, and keep those antennae twitching - that way, you pick up new ideas.-Ian Rankin CHAPTER 4 29 Ideas Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 Humanists Ideas Europe changed in the early 1300s because of new ideas, questions, and ways of thinking brought by Humanism. Humanists were people that tried to put ancient ideas into practice. As Frey states, Humanist ideals also affected peo- ples thinking about social standing(321). Hu- manists also believed that all people had the abil- ity to control their own lives and achieve great- ness. As Frey states, One of the rst humanists was a Italian poet Francesco Petrarch(320). The renaissance brought many advances to many dif- ferent things. Scholars and others made great ad- vances in science and mathematics. As Frey states, Before the Renaissance, most of what people be- lieved about the natural world was based on ideas in ancient Greek and Roman texts(329). Instead, of relying on books and theories, scientist began to perform experiments. One of the most creative renaissance thinkers was Leonardo da Vinci. He was a scientist, inventor, and an artist. As Frey states, Leonardo was endlessly curious. He did not accept anything as true until he proved it him- self(329). This made people question the church because there was no proof that the church was right. The beliefs of humanists challenge the idea of the catholic church because people would ask for valid explanation. During the renaissance, many scientist were discovering the truth of plan- ets and the world. The Roman Catholic church had lost its power because of new beliefs from sci- 30 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 entists. According to Frey, Renaissance scientists proposed new ideas about stars and planets (321). this quote shows there were more theories to challenge the church. The beliefs and ideas of humanists challenge the ideas and changed the tradition of paintings by making paintings much more realistic. Adding feelings to faces, realistic backgrounds, use of perspective. Renaissance art- ists used several different techniques to indicate depth. One was the size of objects. As Frey states, The smaller a painted object, the farther way it ap- pears to be. The larger an object, the closer it ap- pears to be(326). Many painters also learned that a felling of depth could be created by lines that came closer together as they receded into the dis- tance. In conclusion, Europe changed in the early 1300s because of new ideas, questions, and ways of thinking brought by Humanism. Humanist Paragraph 2 If Humanism were brought to Soofer Falls, many laws would be changed, and the environment would be more focused on nature than the people of Soofer Falls. As Frey states, This way of think- ing. Humanism sought to balance religious faith with an emphasis on individual dignity and an in- 31 http://www.timetoast.com/t A Vesuvian Man- Man Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 terest in nature and human society(320). This quote shows that Humanists believed that every individual should be honored, nature should be respected, and every human should be treated the same. Soofer Falls would benet from humanists because there would be a healthier environment, and no one would be complaining about social ranking and such. As the laws of Soofer Falls states, If one wants to live in Soofer Falls, they must work 6 days a week and be productive. Ei- ther at their own house or at a workplace(Soofer 29). Humanist would question the belief system of getting a job because they think each person should do what they want, not having someone tell them what to do. The reason why I made this law exists is so that everyone who lives in the civi- lization will not just be sitting there, they will be productive citizens. Humanists would believe that if would believe that if you want money food and shelter, you must work. A person can still be in the civilization is you dont work, but the citi- zen may not earn money. Humanists would also question Soofer Falls focusing on humans so much. Humanists believe that the citizen should take care of nature and treat it very well. Human- ists would make everyone reuse, reduce, and recy- cle plastic and limit plastic entering the air. If na- ture stays healthy, Soofer Falls stays healthy. Hu- manist ideas will help Soofer Falls change and thrive and make the civilization much better than before. 32 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 Questionable practices and teachings of the Catholic Church The Reformation began in the early 1500s and lasted into the 1600s. Until it began, all Christians in Western Europe were Catholics. Humanists were often not religious in their thinking. The Hu- manists believed in free thought and questioned many accepted beliefs. There were two major problems that weakened the Catholic Church. As Frey states, The rst was worldliness and corruption within the church. The second was political conict between the pope and European monarchs(348). The church was a political and economic organization as well as a religious one. People who were supposedly dedicated to the church failed to live up to their role as religious leaders. Some seemed to ignore Christian values and morals. People were trou- bled by the way many church ofcials tried to get money to support the church. One practice was the selling of indulgences. An indulgence was when a person was released of all of his/hers sins. As Frey states, During the Middle Ages, the church granted indulgences in return for gifts to the church and other good works(348). Many Catholics were very mad because of the abuse of 33 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 selling Indulgences. As Frey states, The church also sold ofces, or leadership posi- tions. This practice is called simo- ny(348). People questioned other practices as well. All Catholics had to pay taxes to the church. Many people didnt want to pay taxes to Rome as well as to their own government. The church members got tired of paying taxes and watching the clergys robes get more and more bejeweled. By the early 1500s, there was considerable trouble in the church. The ideas and questions of Reform- ers such as Martin Luther and John Wycliffe changed what Christians though about the church. The Reformers thought that salvation was given from God, not from buying indulgences. As Frey states, No one, he believed, could earn sal- vation. Instead, salvation was a gift from God that people received in faith(352). Also John Wycliffe challenged the churchs right to money that it de- manded from England. As Frey states, He also at- tacked indulgences and immoral behavior on the part of the clergy(350). Jan Hus was a priest in Bo- hemia; who criticized the wealth of the church and spoke out against the popes authority. As Frey states, Hus wanted to purify the church and return it to the people. He called for an end to corruption among the clergy(351). The church was not fond of Jan Hus beliefs, and so burned 34 http://www.biography.c Martin Luther Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 Hus at the stake. The church was now being ques- tioned about all of the practices such as simony, in- dulgences and many others. Many Germans saw Luther as a hero. The church wanted to change that. The ways the church tried to stop the Protestants was burning them to the stake, usually. Even though many hu- manists and other people were dying off, the church was still being questioned. By the late Mid- dle Ages, the Catholic Church had been weakened by corruption and political struggles. Power of Ideas 3 If the civilization of Soofer Falls were to nominate someone to raise the bar of intelligence and engi- neering, Leonardo Da Vinci would be the guy. Leonardo brings in many talents that Soofer Falls could take advantage of. As Frey states, Leon- ardo was gifted in many elds. He was an accom- plished painter, sculptor, architect, engineer, and inventor(344). Leonardo had one of the greatest creative minds of all time. Soofer Falls would thrive under his ideas and inventions. The goal of this civilization is to keep improving and Leon- ardo would help the people of Soofer Falls to get to that goal. Many of the inventions he drew such as a helicopter and submarine were way more ad- vanced than the time they were in. As Frey states, Leonardos art inspired other great artists, such as Michelangelo. With his many interests and tal- ents, Leonardo is a nearly perfect example of the spirit of the Renaissance(344). Leonardo would 35 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 inuence all of Soofer Falls and inspire many peo- ple to be like him. Not only would Da Vinci have an effect on Soofer Falls itself, but he would also inspire the citizens living there. 36 Dr. Mr. Elliott Soofer Thursday, June 5, 2014 9:30:45 AM Pacic Daylight Time 70:56:81:af:d0:a3 SECTION 1 Bibliography 37 Frey, Wendy.
