Thank you for your letter dated May 13, 2014 regarding Oakcrest High School. The Division of Public
Health does not enforce regulations that deal with ventilation and air conditioning in schools. In fact, we
have been unable to find regulations that require schools to have air conditioning. Under the New Jersey
Department of Labor, there are safety and health standards for public employees. There is a section in the
rules that addresses "indoor air quality". Under N.J.A.C 12: 100-13(a)6; it states:
"Assuring that building without mechanical ventilation are maintained so that windows, doors, vents,
stacks and other portals designed or used for natural ventilation are in operable condition".
We have contacted Charles Muller at the Greater Egg Harbor Regional School District and discussed this
issue. He advised us the windows in the school are operational and can be opened when needed. A copy
of your letter was forwarded to him.
Please be advised public employees may report indoor air quality issues to the New Jersey Department of
Health, Public Employee Occupational Safety and Health Program at 609-984-1863.
