EDUC 515

Final Project
Carynn Kanow

Often times, our students in Special Education need to work on goals that are boring and mundane. I have felt that sometimes my
students get stuck because they lose their drive and motivation to keep on practicing. Technology is great way to break from
routine. It gives the students something to look forward to, a little cognitive dissonance if you will. The tasks they once loathed
become exciting. At least a teacher hopes this will happen when a student is allowed to go out of the box and do something about
their learning.

I have come up with a lesson plan that will incorporate technology into the mundane task of reading fluency. The best way to increase
reading speed and accuracy is through practice. If reading is not preferred activity, the student can quickly become bored or lose
interest. I am hoping that the first day of this unit, the dissonance will be established with a PowToon movie.

Lesson Title: Reading Fluency
Goal
When given a selected (grade level) passage, the student will read at a fluency rate of ___ words correct
per minute with 90% accuracy in 3 consecutive trials. (fluency rate depends on grade level)
Teacher: Carynn Kanow
Grade Level: RSP Grades 1-5
Subject:
Time Frame:

Use of
Technologies:
Reading
2-3 days of centers plus 2 days
with 1 activity each

Phase 1- Using PowToon,
teacher will make a video of the
6 dimensions of Reading
Fluency

Phase 2- (ACE)
Assessment: Teacher will use
Class Dojo to monitor behavior
during the week of centers and
whole class activities

Content Distribution: Teacher
will use Remind 101 to let
parents know what goal is being
focused on and tips to work on
at home to increase reading
fluency.
Expression: Students will use
iMovie to record and watch
their cold and hot reads for
comparison

Phase 3: Web Aggregation

Day 1

Whole Group-
Dissonance- Teacher will show PowToon video of Six Dimensions of Reading
Fluency (info found on Pinterest also). Class will use the video to make an
anchor chart for the class. Students will help create using interactive whiteboard
(Mimeo) and teacher will transfer to chart at a later time.

Days 2-5/6- Centers (small group)/Activity Day/Wrap It Up
Group 1 (Small Group-with an aide)

2. The students will work in their groups using Giggle Poetry-poetry theater
at http://www.gigglepoetry.com/poetrytheater.aspx
3. Students will choose between 2 poems (chosen by teacher) on website
4. Students will choose what part they want from website

Group 2 (Independent)

1. Student will use the computer to log onto Read Naturally.
2. Student will go to their account and choose a passage on their level for a
cold reading
3. Student will do a cold reading and then a hot reading

2. Students will take turns reading an a-z reading passage (given to them by
teacher) as the partner records them using iMovie.
3. After recording the cold read, the student will watch it back to hear
how they sound they will record the time on the bottom of their passage
in the cold read column.
4. The student will then read it again as the partner records it. They will
watch (and listen to) their second read and record their time on their
passage, next to the cold read.
5. Students will determine if and by how much their 2
nd
read was faster than
their cold read (they will either subtract themselves or ask an adult)

Group 4 (Student/Teacher)

1. Student will meet with the teacher to read a passage
2. Student will do a cold read and a hot read.
3. Teacher will record the readings using the Fluency Timer on the iPod
4. Student will listen to their hot read, the teacher will save it and then they
will listen to their hot read
5. Student will delete their cold read and save their hot read to compare to
their next hot read
***may also use the Fluency Finder website and app***

Activity Day (Can do in between center days-does not include technology)
Students will practice with a partner, outside in the garden, reading
partner poetry
Students will go to garden area and separate into partners
Teacher will provide them with Partner Poetry pages to practice

what part
Students will meet in the amphitheater area to perform their partner
poetry to the rest of the groups

Wrap it Up/Activity Day (after all centers/activities are finished)

Using information on Pinterest.com, make an anchor chart to Self-Evaluate
Your Fluency http://www.pinterest.com/pin/375698793885389810/ use the
document camera to project on white board

Activity: Students will sing along while reading the words to popular Disney
songs karaoke style using the LCD projector and YouTube.
Product/Assessment

The teacher and instructional assistants will keep a data-tracking sheet for each
student to track results (these are kept in the students files).

They will each be assigned a center and they will ensure that students stay
focused and on task during the activities. They will complete the data sheet
(rubric) for each student.

The centers should take 2-3 days. Students will practice fluency in the garden
one day in between center days, have a Wrap it Up day, and on the last day
they will do a karaoke activity in the classroom.
