PV Marching Band Member Expectations

PVMB is one of the districts most visible activities and among the top
performing in the music department. Because of the many football games, parades,
band shows, and community events, more people see the marching band than just
about any other musical group in the district. As a result, there are numerous
expectations of every member so that we can continue to represent the school well.
They are outlined below.

1. Attendance
The marching band is an inter-dependent activity and its success depends on
everyone giving their best at all time. The only way to do that is to attend every
possible rehearsal time. (If a practice needs to be missed, a note must be written
prior to the rehearsal.) Each and every performance is mandatory. Though it
seems obvious, regular attendance at school is required as well. Students cannot be
absent frequently and still participate in marching band. An absence on a Friday, per
school policy, will result in the student being ineligible to perform at a football game
or/and weekend event. Frequent absences will result in dismissal from the group at
the discretion of the staff.
2. Grade Eligibility
As an extra-curricular activity, PVMB must adhere to the PV and PVAA rules
regarding eligibility. Students failing 2 classes (or the same class in consecutive
weeks) are not permitted to participate in the following weeks rehearsals AND/OR
performances. Unlike sports where ineligibility means you cant practice or play,
this has a greater effect on the band. In band, there is NO ONE else who can replace
you and play your position for a game. Without you, there is hole that has a
negative effect on the performance of the entire band.
3. Health and Safety
Marching band is a physical activity and as such it is expected that you attend all
practices and events having eaten, being well-hydrated, and well-rested. The staff
does take into account the strains of marching on the human body and will make
every effort to keep members safe by offering planned water breaks, and allowing
for meal times on long days. A first aid kit is available.
4. Musicianship
The PVMB is a group that plays difficult music and expects a high level of success in
its execution at public performances. In order to achieve this, every musician must
prepare their individual parts on their own so that all the parts can be blended
together at rehearsals. With all the music there is to be learned, in addition to all the
field maneuvers, there is no time to teach individuals how to read and play their
own specific parts. All music is to be memorized for performance on the field.
Members may be called upon to play a different instrument than perhaps they want
to. This is done in order to create a band with the proper balance so that the entire
group (and audience) can benefit. Each and every part is important and they must
all be played. The staff makes the decisions and the performers musical ability is
also taken into account.
5. Behavior
As one of the most visible groups in the school, the behavior of any member reflects
upon the whole. Whether or not you are in uniform, your actions represent that of
the entire band. It is expected that everyone treat each other with kindness and
respect. Any form of bullying or hazing is not permitted and violators of this policy
will receive disciplinary action from the HS office as well as the band staff.
