Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both of the lungs. These
abnormal cells dont perform like normal cells and do not develop into healthy lung tissue. As
they grow they can form tumors witch is very unhealthy for the lungs and it can also interfere
with the functioning of the lungs. If the lungs get blocked with tumors then the lungs wont be
able to provide enough oxygen to the blood. Pipe and cigarette smoke may be the leading
cause of lung cancer. Some people who have never smoked can also develop lung cancer if they
have relatives who smoke or used to smoke. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths.
More than 116,470 men and 109,690 women are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. 2 out
of 3 people are diagnosed over the age of 65.
There are many different types of lung cancer, but the two main Im going to focus on is small
cell lung cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. Small cell lung cancer is that in witch your lungs
are two sponge-like, air-filled organs located on either the left or right side of your chest. When
you inhale, your lungs absorb oxygen and send it to the bloodstream for use by your cells.
Carbon dioxide, (a waste product of cells) travels through the bloodstream to the lungs. It is
released when you exhale. Non-Small lung cancer is when Cancer occurs when abnormal cells
rapidly multiply and dont stop reproducing. The disease can develop anywhere in the body.
Treatment is based on its location. When it comes from the lungs, it is lung cancer.
There are many different symptom of lung cancer that is in the chest:

Pain in the chest, shoulder, or back unrelated to pain from coughing
Shortness of breath
Changes in the voice
Harsh sounds with each breath (stridor)

Headaches, bone or joint pain

Radiation Therapy this treatment is for people with small cell lung cancer, regardless of
stage, chemotherapy is an essential part of treatment. Radiation treatment may be used
as well depending on the stage of cancer. For people with limited-stage small cell lung
cancer, you half to take both chemotherapy and radiation therapy given at the same
time is the recommended treatment. For people with extensive-stage small cell lung
cancer, chemotherapy alone using a regimen is the standard treatment. Radiation
therapy of the brain may be used before or after chemotherapy for some people whose
cancer has spread to the brain. Some treatments for Non-Small cell lung cancer are
Surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and targeted treatmentsalone or in combination
are used to treat lung cancer. Each of these types of treatments may cause different
side effects. Most stage I and stage II non-small cell lung cancers are treated with
surgery to remove the tumor. For this procedure, a surgeon removes the lobe, or
section, of the lung containing the tumor.
If doctors have found lung cancer in your lung then they take a small piece of tissue
from the lung and it hast to be examined under a microscope to look for cancer cells.
Or lung cancer may be diagnosed with a biopsy; this procedure can be performed in
different ways. In some cases, the doctor will pass a needle through the skin into the
lungs to remove a small piece of tissue; this procedure is often called a needle biopsy.
When a person is diagnosed with lung cancer, looking at biopsied cells under the
microscope also helps doctors determine the type of lung cancer. It is important to
know the specific type because this will helps doctors recommend the best treatment
for you.

Introduction
My name is Christina Gundrum. In this paper I will be talking to you
about what lung cancer is also the different type of lung cancer, signs
and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment and also how to treat lung
cancer. Did you know that people who have family members that
smoke may be at risk for developing lung cancer?
