ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBonos Thinking Hats Rationale: It is important for students to learn the Pilgrims journey from a geographical lens. They will study the location the Pilgrims came from compared to the location the Pilgrims settled. They will be able to learn how to read a map in order to follow the journey of the Mayflower. Standards: State Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 17.A.1a Identify physical characteristics of places, both local and global (e.g., locations, roads, regions, bodies of water). 17.A.1b Identify the characteristics and purposes of geographic representations including maps, globes, graphs, photographs, software, digital images and be able to locate specific places using each.

Students will look explore an interactive website about the journey of the Mayflower.
Materials: -Laptops -Laptop cart Objective Intuitive Students will take on the role of the Captain of the Mayflower. Students will create a Captains Log over the course of three days describing any three key locations we learned about.
Materials: -Pencil -Coloring utensils -Aged paper -Construction paper -Scissors -String
Intuitive Positive/Strengths Positive/Strengths Students will explore this website and complete the following quiz. Students will then list the positive aspects of taking the route the Pilgrims took to cross over to America.
Materials: -Laptops -Laptop cart -Pencil -Paper Negatives/Weaknesses Students will watch the following video. As a class, we will discuss the video. Then, students will list the negative aspects of taking the route the Pilgrims took to cross over to America.
Materials: -Laptops -Laptop cart -Pencil -Paper
Negatives/Weaknesses Creative Creative Students will be given a blank map. Students will be given a word bank and will have to label the map. Students will draw in the route the Pilgrims sailed.
Materials: -Blank map -Mayflower cut out -Coloring utensils -Pencil -Scissors -Notes (students will be able to use their notes during this activity)
Thinking About Thinking Thinking About Thinking Students will answer the following questions: Now look at current map of that area. If you were traveling that distance today, what route might you follow? What transportation would you use? How long would it take?

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBonos Thinking Hats Assessment: I will assess the students by having a rubric for anything the students will be creating. Guidelines will be provided for any written work and I will turn those guidelines into checklists for assessing the students work.
