http://www.k12.wa.us/curriculumInstruct/EALR_GLE.aspx

The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of communication.
o 4.1 Assesses effectiveness of one's own and others' communication.
o Applies established criteria to guide analysis of strengths and weaknesses in
own communication.

b. Unit Objective: To bring awareness to students of the impact of their words/actions on other
students and to promote a positive classroom environment

c. Lesson Objective: To help students identify what specific names and actions they have experi-
enced that have caused unwanted feelings (anger, sadness, etc) and the impact it has

d. ASCA Student Competencies and Indicators:
PS:A1.5 Identify and express feelings
PS:A2.8 Learn how to make and keep friends

Lesson Rationale:
A. Connection to School Improvement Plan:
Mt. View Elementarys mission statement is Doing Whatever It Takes to assure each
student achieves academic social and emotional success. The delivery of this lesson
gives additional tools and brings a new awareness for students in which they can use
everyday at school that focuses specifically on the social and emotional aspect of the
mission.

B. Connection to Data Driven Decision-Making:
Needs Assessment- Before the lesson was delivered a school-wide screening/needs
assessment was given to all of Mt. View Elementary. The needs assessment required
teachers to fill out a survey based on the internalized and externalized behavior for each
student of their classroom. The two areas of concern for this 3rd/4th grade class was
Behavior Problems and Negative Attitude. Upon a meeting with the classroom
teacher she further explained that her classroom was using negative language with
each other.

Lesson Outline:
1. Give out pre-survey and provide expectations for classroom behavior
2. Have classroom sit in a circle and introduce the lesson
Establish expectations for classroom to be real with what they share and to respect what others
are sharing.
Give a disclaimer that when students are sharing experiences to leave the students name out.
3. On a poster have kids list experiences, either names, or events in which other classmates have
done something they dont like. Title on top of poster- Things we dont like
As they share, have them make a connection to a feeling of how they felt when it happened
Note themes of feelings (e.g., Sad, Mad, Angry etc.)
Some students may laugh during this step, assure them that it is normal to laugh when uncom-
fortable but ask them to try and keep the laughing to a minimum and be respectful of the person
sharing
After everyone has shared, ask the group to raise their hand if they have ever been called or ex-
perienced something similar to the list. As a follow up ask them to be honest and then ask if
theyve ever called someone else or had done something on the list to another person.
4. To give a visual and to drive the point home; after students are done sharing experiences fill a
large bowl with water and sprinkle pepper generously on to water in bowl.
Explain that the pepper represents everyone in the classroom hanging out.
5. Introduce the soap and ask if anyone has heard the expression Putting soap in the mouth ex-
plain that when children back in the day would use curse words or offensive language often they
would have to put soap in their mouths to clean up their language
Make the connection that when people use hurtful language towards others this is the effect it
can have
Place a drop of liquid soap on your finger then place your finger in the middle of the bowl. (The
pepper will spread out towards the sides of the bowl)
Ask the students what is happening? and why do you think people would try to get away?
6. Debrief the activity by reiterating the fact that the words we use with other people can have an im-
pact on them. That when we use disrespectful or hateful language others may not want to be around
us.

Evaluation/Assessment: A post-test/survey was given after the lesson to each student to determine
what they had learned from the lesson. Teacher will fill out evaluation form on presenters lesson

Materials Needed: Hula Hoops, Poster/Large Paper, Markers
A poster labeled Steps During Conflicts with the steps:
1. Is what Im doing, hurting or helping?
2. How is the Other Person Feeling?
3. What will I do next?

Lesson Outline:
1. Have classroom sit in circle
2. On a poster write, Things we like and have the students share experiences in which they were
apart of in which they or someone else did something that they liked. (e.g. Someone asked me to
play, someone checked on me when I was having a bad day)
Connect these experiences with feelings and make note of themes (e.g. happy, thankful)
3. Review previous poster of Things we dont like and make note between what is on each list and
the themes of how they make us feel.
4. Make a new poster to discuss reasons of why might people say or do hurtful things to others
5. Teach that the only one responsible for how you behave is yourself:
Clarify that adults such as parents and teachers may tell you what to do and there may be con-
sequences for not doing what they tell you but you are ultimately the one responsible for what
you do.
6. Activity: Have classroom standup forming a circle and hold hands with the people to the left and
right of them. Start with the hula hoop between connected hands of two people and then give in-
structions that the hula hoop needs to go all around in a circle. Encourage the students to use
encouraging and positive words with each other during the activity.
Some students may feel uncomfortable holding the hands of a classmate so may have to adjust
accordingly (switch their spot, allow them to sit out, etc)
7. Debrief activity focusing on what it was like to have the whole classroom working as a team, re-
view what it was like for students to hear positive encouragement. Explain that in order to change the
environment of the classroom each students has to become responsible of their behavior.
8. Review poster of Steps During Conflicts poster (listen in materials)
9. Give out post-test/survey

Evaluation/Assessment: A post-test/survey was given after the lesson to each student to determine
what they had learned from the lesson. Teacher will fill out evaluation form on presenters lesson
