2 Two weeks post-surgery: High Protein Pureed diet 3-4 meals /day (a meal is 2-4 Tbsp) + 2-3 protein shakes (20-30g pro <4g sugar) fluid goal 64oz /day meals and fluids separated by half hour no whole pills biggest focus is on hydration and protein needs
3 Four weeks post-surgery: Bariatric Soft Diet foods can be mashed with a fork 3 meals /day + 2 protein shakes no liquids with meals Three months post-surgery: Bariatric Diet can add protein bars can add raw veg, seeds, nuts Vitamin Regimen: (CHEWABLES or crushables) 1. Multivitamin 2. Iron 3. B-complex with at least 15mg Thiamin (Vit B1) 4. Calcium Citrate + Vit D (3 Doses of 500-600mg /day) 5. Vitamin B12 (monthly injections or sublingual 500mcg/day) NUTRITION guidelines for Bariatric patients NUTRITION DISCHARGE INSTRUCTIONS: 80-120 g protein Follow liquid diet for 2 weeks after surgery- When you get home, start by adding protein powder to your clear liquids (water, Crystal Light, broth) After 2-3 days, begin mixing protein powders with skim milk/1% milk/soy milk as tolerated Gradually work back up to 80g protein per day (Typically 3 protein shakes per day) Avoid ready to drink shakes, as they may be too thick Fluid goal is minimum 48 ounces per day in addition to the protein drinks. Sip continuously NO caffeine, alcohol, carbonation, straws Start Vitamin Regimen (no whole pills) Do not lift anything heavier than 8-10 lbs for the first 6 weeks after surgery Sleeve Gastrectomy: No whole pills for 3 months post-surgery Gastric Bypass: No whole pills for 6 months post- Surgery Gastric Banding: No whole pills
