I. Background

Who are the learners?
3rd graders in an optional English workshop at school.

What is the setting? Be sure to mention technology.
Their own school; theyve got IWB in each classroom and an IT lab.

What are the course goals?
To practise topics they deal with in their regular English lessons and to have more exposure
to English.

Why are the students studying English?
Because the school and parents think that learning English is important for their future.

Describe anything else that is significant or relevant about the course that may potentially
relate to your plan.
There are quite a number of students in the course (more than 30).

II. Issue or problem to be addressed that technology can help with. Whats wrong?
There are too many students in the class to follow everyones work throughout the year. Plus,
there is a clear difference of levels of English among some students, and some of them are quite
shy.

III. Specific technology solution
I would divide them into groups of 3 or 4 students, all with different levels of performance (in general).
To practise speaking (and listening, since they'll have to listen and correct each other's work) skills I
would make them prepare a dialogue/presentation with some vocabulary deal in class. First, they would
have to do one each and then, share it with the other students in the group. Then, they would help each
other improve their presentations by sharing comments (that's why the differences in level) and, finally,
they would have to create just one presentation as a group.
The same task could be done for practising Writing (and reading since they'll have to read and correct
each other's work) skills.
By taking these steps and grouping them in this way, students' shyness would reduce a fair amount and
they would profit from those who are better at English (in general terms).
Of course the teacher will be there all the time to monitor their work and to help students as much as they
need.

What technology tool(s) did you consider using?
One for practising speaking skills (goes hand-in-hand with listening in this task) and one for
writing skills (goes hand-in-hand with reading in this task).
Tcnicas Informticas. 1 Cuatrimestre 2014.

What technology tool will you use to address the problem (can be one or two tools only)?
VoiceThread for speaking and listening and Penzu for reading and writing.
Voicetread: http://voicethread.com/
Penzu: https://penzu.com/p

What is your goal for this technology tool?
To reduce the difference in level among students by making them help each other; to work in
a space which does not make them feel as nervous or shy when reading and speaking, as is the
case in the usual classroom.

What do you want your students or the technology tool to do?
I want them to work individually first; then, to share their work with the other students in the
group and to assess each others work. Later, they would have to make the same task but as a
group.

Is this technology new to you? How did you learn about it?
Yes, it is. Ive learned about it in a course Im taking at college.

What do you think might happen when you try/use the technology with your students?
I think theyll be very enthusiastic about using these tools and will profit from the experience
much more than if they had to do the work individually and with the normal classroom setting.

How will this be different from what youve done before?
This will make students work collaboratively and not with the usual teacher-student assessment.

IV. Final Product

Assessment Rubric Yes More or less No
Do students use the technology in the right way?
Do they take the task seriously?
Do they work collaboratively?
Do they profit from each others comments?
Are they overcoming their shyness?
Do they work in a serious/committed way?
Do they follow the instructions?
Do they get along with each other?
Do they meet the deadlines?

Tcnicas Informticas. 1 Cuatrimestre 2014.
These technology tools will be used during a month in the course. They will spend two out of the
three classes per week theyve got to deliver this project. They will perform the task in the IT
room and maybe share their final work in the classrooms, in the IWB.

V. Expected response

I think students, as well as administrators, colleagues and parents will respond positively
because it is a different and more profitable way of developing students skills than the one used
in the normal classroom. I believe they will see the profit that this project can make in students
development.

There could be some problems regarding students behaviour towards each other. If so, I would
rearrange the groups in another way.
