Civil War
Southern States leave the Union and form the
Confederate Army
The Civil War lasts 4 years ending in victory for the
union

Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation is often thought as
one of the major parts of the civil war
It proclaimed the freedom of slaves in the 10 states
that were in rebellion
Persons among those freed could be enrolled into the
paid service of United States' forces


Gettysburg Address
Assassination
John Wilkes Booth was a well-known actor and a
Confederate spy from Maryland
On the 14
th
April 1865, Booth shot Lincoln in the
back of the head


Legacy
In surveys ranking Presidents since the 1940s,
Lincoln is consistently ranked in the top three, often
#1
President Lincoln's assassination made him a
national martyr and endowed him with recognition
of mythic proportion.
