Consumers in

the digital age

YOUR RIGHTS, OUR MISSION
STRATEGY 2015
1. CI will campaign to hold online
service providers to account.
We will seek to address key areas affecting
consumers and achieve clear improvements,
with particular emphasis on the provision of
broadband services.
We will work with members to
identify consumer concerns, provide
recommendations, and engage with the
industry and other NGOs to improve
standards and technical measures accordingly.
With additional funds, we will also investigate
consumer concerns relating to tracking online
activity and the use of this data in marketing.
In todays digital world, the consumer depends
on access to reliable, affordable and safe
communication networks. CI aims to make this
a reality through global campaigning for fairer
laws and practices, holding industry players to
account for their treatment of consumers, and
capacity building for our members empowering
them as activists for consumer rights online.
2. CI will campaign to improve
consumer representation in
governance institutions.
We will make sure consumers views are
represented in international bodies relating
to the information society.
We will conduct a review of consumer
representation within relevant international
organisations, and then work with members
(particularly those from developing countries) to
improve representation where it is needed most.
3. CI will continue to campaign for
consumers access to knowledge
(A2K).
We will call for consumers rights concerning
the fair use of or fair dealing with copyright
material to be expanded and better
harmonised across the world.
At the UN, we will lobby for A2K to be
accepted as a topic for amendment in the
United Nations Guidelines for Consumer
Protection.
At a national level, we will work with members
to rank the Intellectual Property laws and
practices of countries in order of fairness,
publishing the results in an annual IP
Watchlist. We will also provide evidence-
based research on how existing consumer
protection laws can be abused to infringe
consumers rights.
At industry level, we will negotiate with
IP bodies to establish fair use rights for
consumers in countries where law reform
lags behind.
We will also make small sub-grants for
lobbying on A2K campaigns helping our
developing country members advocate for
better access to knowledge at a national level.
