Food safety,

security and
nutrition
YOUR RIGHTS, OUR MISSION
STRATEGY 2015
Weve already shown how our advocacy
can make a big difference. Weve helped
secure landmark changes in the marketing
of food to children and the labelling of GM
food, and delivered training for national food
safety projects in Asia. Our commitment to
food safety, security and nutrition will see
us building on these achievements over the
strategic period 2012-2015.
Consumer access to safe and nutritious food cannot
be taken for granted. Health risks associated
with changing diets, new threats to food safety,
and unstable food prices all threaten this
basic consumer need. CIs accreditation to key
organisations like the WHO, Codex and FAO, as
well as our ability to co-ordinate advocacy at a
global level, means were well placed to support
and represent our members in this important area.
1. CI will be the leading international
advocate for action to support
consumers in choosing a healthy diet.
CI will lobby for clear changes in international
food companies policies in relation to at least
two of the following areas:
The adoption of trafc light labelling
on food packaging
The adoption of calorie labelling in
chain restaurants
A ban on the use of trans fatty acids
A ban on junk food marketing to children
Reformulation of processed food, including
a reduction in the use of salt.
Several of these consumer issues have already
been subject to international and regional
negotiations, yet progress is disappointingly slow.
Because of this, CI will focus on campaigning
for companies to adopt better practices.
Working with our members, we will survey
international food companies policies and
practices, producing high prole reports
highlighting good and bad practice and
inconsistencies between regions. We will
also host regional and international events
to engage with companies, public health
organisations and others, making the case
for consistently high standards and the
implementation of international targets
and recommendations.
2. CI will support our members
lobbying for stronger food safety
standards.
CI will seek stronger international food
safety standards, particularly in relation to
ractopamine, antibiotic resistance and food
labelling. We will accredit members that have
the expertise and resources to represent CI at
Codex Alimentarius and, where appropriate,
use our network to lobby national Codex
contact points.
We will also help CI members in developing
countries to participate in the development
of effective national food safety systems,
improve food safety standards in shops and
restaurants, and provide consumer education
on the safe preparation and handling of food.
3. CI will monitor international
processes relating to food prices, and
support members in doing so at the
national level.
Volatile food prices are a major issue for
consumers around the world, yet different
causes have made it difcult for CI to intervene
directly. Because of this, CI will support
members work on food prices by providing
up-to-date and accessible information on
what international organisations and processes
(such as the FAO, OECD and G20) are doing
and saying.
We will develop a toolkit to help our members
monitor food prices at a national level, giving
practical options that can be adapted to
members different levels of resources.
We will also investigate whether our members
in developing countries are able to establish
food co-operatives - increasing the availability
of reasonably priced, good quality food, while
providing a sustainable revenue stream for the
consumer organisation.
