System Overview
SR9705 Overview
A member of the ECIs switch router family, the SR9705 is the next generation,
high-capacity switch router. A centralized non-blocking fabric chipset resides
on each Route Control Processor (RCP) which is used to route data between
Network Processor Blades (NPBs). The SR9705 RCP combines the functions of
a switching fabric and a standard RCP on a common board. Two RCPs are
required for redundancy. Similarly, the SR9705 NPB combines the functions of
a Physical Interface card (PHY) and a standard NPB on a common board. The
SR9705 contains two RCPs and five NPBs with a total switching capacity up to
200 Gbps.

SR9705 Installation and Maintenance
Manual System Overview
Key Features
This section provides a high-level overview of the SR9705s key features.
Carrier-class hardware
The carrier-class SR9705 provides the hardware reliability required in the metro
aggregation network where thousands of customers and a range of switched and
routed services can be aggregated in a single device. All common equipment is
redundant and hot-swappable for maximum uptime and reliability, including:
Network Processor Blades (NPBs)
Route Fabric Modules (RCPs)
Hard disk drive
Power modules (AC or DC)
Fan trays
This level of device redundancy eliminates the need for dual switch router
configurations, simplifying network infrastructures and significantly reducing
expenses.
Internet-class routing
The SR9705 includes a highly scalable, Internet-class routing engine designed
specifically to interoperate seamlessly with current IP backbones. As the main
controller for the SR9705, the RCP runs the system software and a full suite of
routing protocols. To ensure the RCP can focus on the task of scalable routing,
the SR9705 features separate processors for control and forwarding functions.
All forwarding, packet processing, and link management are distributed to the
NPB cards, freeing the RCP to focus on routing table maintenance, signaling,
and network management. This ensures reliable end-to-end service delivery that
scales to meet demand without sacrificing features or performance.
Carrier Ethernet QoS
The SR9700 series is fully compliant to Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) standards
and is MEF 9 and MEF 14 certified for E-Line and E-LAN services. The
SR9700 series provides E-Line (Ethernet Private Line and Ethernet Virtual
Private Line) services via IETF-defined PWE3 standards and provides E-LAN
and E-TREE services via IETF-standardized VPLS/H-VPLS signaling. The
SR9700 series also supports IEEE-802.1q and IEEE-802.1ad standards for
Virtual Bridged Local Area Networks. It provides hierarchical Quality of
Service (QoS), Service OAM and Virtual User Network Interface (UNI) for all
MEF services.

System Overview SR9705 Installation and Maintenance Manual
Advanced packet processing and forwarding
The SR9705s NPB provides high-performance, distributed packet processing
and forwarding using a highly scalable lookup operation to determine next hop
and Type of Service (ToS) treatment. The SR9705 NPB features dual packet-
parsing engines and a central IP forwarding engine. Each NPB has a capacity of
up to 40 Gbps (or 80 Gbps at half-duplex) and a forwarding and processing rate
of up to 40 Gbps. The IP processing engine can perform line-rate IP forwarding
for up to 1,000,000 prefixes. Additional features of the SR9705 NPB include:
IPv6 forwarding and classification
Extensive tunneling support at wire speed (L2TPv3, GRE, PIM, IPv6 in
IPv4)
Deep packet classification and filtering for up to 128,000 policies
Support for up to 128,000 MPLS labels/label switched paths (LSPs)
Support for up to 64,000 logical interfaces
Modular, granular interfaces
One SR9705 supports up to five (5) NPB cards. To minimize initial and ongoing
capital costs, the SR9705 utilizes highly modular Ethernet interfaces that
support a wide range of customer speeds with high levels of granularity.
Interface channels on the SR9705 can be independently configured to support a
variety of encapsulations. This one card fits all solution requires fewer
physical interconnects, accelerating provisioning and reducing deployment and
sparing costs.
Comprehensive hardware-based
service accounting
The SR9705 includes the most comprehensive tunable hardware counters in the
industry. More than 2,000,000 packet/byte counters utilize a powerful suite of
service management and accounting features to provide detailed statistics at
each stage of processing. Always- accurate service accounting collects and
stores statistics for every single packet and byte of traffic for transfer to OSS
and accounting applications.
Robust QoS and traffic management
The SR9705 provides robust, granular QoS and traffic management capabilities
for both Layer 2 and Layer 3 traffic and follows established standards. The
result is dependable, predictable performance for all types of traffic even
delay-sensitive voice and video traffic.
Per logical interface queuing ensures each interface is guaranteed a fair
amount of bandwidth

SR9705 Installation and Maintenance
Manual System Overview
Per Class of Service (CoS) queuing and scheduling provides four strict
priorities combined with Weighted Fair Queuing to ensure customers
receive a mix of guaranteed and over-subscribed services.
Wire-speed packet classification provides differentiated services based on
Layer 2 classifiers such as the Ethernet 802.1p bit, EXP for MPLS, as well
as Layer 3/4 IP multifield classifiers such as source/destination address and
Type of Service (ToS)
Standard and custom policing schemes enable the creation of burstable
services with guaranteed bandwidth
Weighted Random Early Detection (WRED) congestion management
maximizes link utilization and ensures traffic delivery under congestion
Flexible queuing model provides three levels of hierarchy with per-class,
per-customer, and per-port scheduling and shaping.
Integrated service management
Unlike traditional carrier switching and routing systems with network
management included as an afterthought, ECI built service management into the
SR9705 from the beginning. Seamless connectivity to back-office and higher-
level OSS applications is achieved via advanced high-level APIs with the
ShadeTree Management Suite (STMS), a powerful, integrated service
provisioning and management system. The result is dramatically reduced
provisioning time and cost as well as improved service and network
management through enhanced efficiency, security, and reliability.
Total security
To meet the high level of security required in service provider networks, the
SR9705 architecture ensures that all aspects of service delivery are secured,
including the management plane, control plane, and data plane. Confidentiality
of user traffic is preserved using secure tunnels, access control lists, encryption,
and authentication (e.g., RADIUS, TACACS+). In addition, the SR9705 has
been designed to prevent a wide range of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.
System Architecture
Optimized for deployment in the metro aggregation network, the SR9705
utilizes a redundant, modular design that enables highly scalable routin and
switching, as well as flexible interfaces and Ethernet support all at wire
speed. This type of architecture is essential at the edge where systems must be
extremely reliable and support a large number of customers and a wide range of
services.
1-6 ECI Telecom Ltd. Proprietary 497006-2301-013-A00
System Overview SR9705 Installation and Maintenance Manual
As shown in Figure1-3, the SR9705 architecture consists of two major
components:
Redundant Route Control Processors (RCPs)
Redundant Network Processing Boards (NPBs)
Figure 1-3: SR9705 architecture
Highly scalable routing
As the main controller for the SR9705, the Route Control Processor (RCP) runs
the system software and full suite of routing protocols including BGP, OSPF-
TE, IS-IS-TE and RIPv2, as well as MPLS signaling (RSVP-TE, LDP) and
multicast (PIM-SM, MBGP, IGMPv2). Because all forwarding and interface
maintenance is distributed to the network processor and line cards, the RCP can
support a large number of routes.
Distributed processing
To ensure the RCP can focus on the task of scalable routing, the SR9705

SR9705 Installation and Maintenance
Manual System Overview
Fully redundant components
To ensure that no single component failure leads to a total system failure, all
major SR9705 components (RCPs, power supplies, fan trays) are fully
redundant, meeting the rigorous uptime and reliability requirements of service
provider networks.
System Software
ShadeTree software is designed to meet high levels of fault tolerance and
reliability. The software is comprised of multiple processes, with fault isolation
and memory protection between each software process and the system kernel.
This protects the kernel and other processes from corruption in the event one
process fails.
The system kernel provides the infrastructure for ShadeTree. It links all system
processes and is robust in the event of software failures.
The system software is designed so that no one process can consume all CPU
resources by servicing all processes on a round-robin basis. ShadeTree software
runs the kernel in supervisor mode which gives the system exclusive rights to
perform critical system functions.
ShadeTree System Software
ShadeTree software sets a new standard in switch router software design, with
metro-optimized distribution of link management to component cards.
ShadeTree contains the software that enables user management of the router,
runs Internet routing protocols, controls router interfaces, and controls the
chassis.
There are several processes that comprise ShadeTree software:
Routing control process daemon (rcpd)
Configuration process daemon (cfgd)
SNMP process daemon (snmpd)
Process manager (procman)
Command line interface (CLI) process (lsh)
Each of these processes run independently of each other to protect against
system corruption if one of the processes fail.
Figure1-4 illustrates the software architecture.

Routing control process (RCPD)
At the heart of ShadeTree is the routing control process (RCPD). The RCPD:
Controls the routing protocols
Maintains the Routing Information Database (RIB)
Controls MPLS label allocation
Manages the processes on the NPBs, packet fabrics, and TDM fabrics
Performs routing policy
The RCPD maintains a connection and shares information with other system
processes. It also sends operational information to the CLI and the STMS.
Configuration process (CFGD)
The configuration process manages the configuration database and performs
configuration operations. It also responds to requests to change the
configuration and propagates configuration changes to the rest of the system.
The configuration process manager is the only part of the system software that
has access to the configuration database. All requests to change the
configuration database must pass through the configuration process manager.

SR9705 Installation and Maintenance
Manual System Overview
SNMP process (SNMPD)
The SNMP process controls and manages all SNMP requests. SNMP allow you
to monitor the operation of the router. The SR9705 currently provides only
SNMP read access. The SR9705 supports the following SNMP Management
Information Bases (MIBs):
Interfaces Group MIB (RFC 2863)
System MIB (RFC 1213)
Interface MIB (RFC 1573)
OSPF MIB (RFC 1850)
BGP-4 MIB (RFC 1657)
SNMPv2 MIB (RFC 1907)
SNMP Objects MIB (RFC 2571)
Entity MIB, version 2 (RFC 2737)
System MIB (RFC 1213)
IS-IS MIB (RFC 4444)
ECI Enterprise MIBs
Command line interface (CLI) process (LSH)
The CLI is the primary interface used to access, configure and monitor the
SR9705. The CLI is used to interact with the SR9705 whether a user is logged
on from a console or logged on from a remote location via telnet or a secure
shell.
The CLI operates in two modes, operational and configuration. Changes made
to the configuration of the router are not implemented until the user commits
those changes, at which time they are pushed out to the hardware.
Both operational and configuration commands are organized into an intuitive
hierarchical structure that features context-sensitive help throughout. The CLI
also features command completion.
Configuration information can either be entered through the CLI command
structure, or loaded into the router from a text file. In addition, the CLI supports
the use of configuration scripts.
Process manager (Procman)
The process manager monitors all system processes and verifies that they are
operating. If the process manager discovers that a process has failed, it restarts
the process. The process manager is also responsible for initially starting
ShadeTree processes when the SR9705 boots.
1-10 ECI Telecom Ltd. Proprietary 497006-2301-013-A00
System Overview SR9705 Installation and Maintenance Manual
Dual IP stacks
ShadeTree maintains two separate IP stacks: one for the management and
auxiliary interfaces and one for router interfaces. This isolates the management
network from the service provider network, providing a high level of security
for the management network. Management services remain secure because no
IP traffic is forwarded between the IP stacks, preventing access to the
management network through the provider network. Management network
configuration and maintenance is simplified by maintaining that configuration
in a separate hierarchy from the interface configuration.
Management services, such as NTP, SNMP, DNS, and STMS, can only access
the SR9705 through the management network.
Network utilities, such as Ping, Traceroute, Telnet, SSH, and FTP, run on both
IP stacks. The CLI allows you to choose on which network to use these utilities.
By default, the router interface network is used by network utilities.
Routing protocols
ShadeTree manages all configured routing protocols and handles all routing
messages. ShadeTree software is responsible for maintaining routing tables for
multiple routing instances and determining active routes for each instance.
ShadeTree is also responsible for updating and downloading routing and
forwarding table information to the component cards.
Supported protocols
The SR9705 supports the following suite of routing and signaling protocols:
Unicast routing: BGP-4, OSPF-TE, IS-IS-TE, RIPv2
Multicast routing: MBGP, PIM-SM, IGMPv2
MPLS signaling: RSVP-TE, LDP
ShadeTree software supports multiple routing protocol instances and the
creation of multiple private IP backbone networks. In addition, it supports the
creation of multiple Layer 2 and Layer 3 services, including IP VPN services.
Routing policy
ShadeTree software uses a centralized routing table, known as the Routing
Information Base (RIB) to store routing information. Every routing protocol
stores its information in the RIB. ShadeTree uses the information stored in the
RIB to calculate the best route to use when downloading information to the
forwarders (NPBs). Routing policy controls the method in which routing
information enters and leaves the RIB and the method in which routes are used.
The routing policy is flexible in its syntax, which allows you to configure and
apply many different types of routing policies.

SR9705 Installation and Maintenance
Manual System Overview
Firewall filters
Firewall filters allow you to filter traffic destined for, or traversing through, an
SR9705. Packets are filtered based on their content and then actions are applied
to the packet, such as to reject, accept, or redirect the packet. By using firewall
filters, you can control the packets that are sent to and travel through the switch
router.
System management and security
System management
ShadeTree software supports connection with SNMP, TCP/IP, and common object
request broker architecture (CORBA) based systems, including the STMS.
Security
ShadeTree supports authenticated access to the SR9705 through several
methods:
Local password and account
Local SSH public key
RADIUS server authentication
TACACS+server authentication
Multiple authentication options can be used on the SR9705 concurrently. You
can choose the order in which authentication methods are used.
Denial of Service protection
Thorough Denial of Service (DoS) attack testing has been performed against
both IP stacks on the SR9705. ECI performed many standard DoS attacks (e.g.,
pingofdeath, synful, fraggle, boink) against the SR9705 to verify that the router
would withstand such attacks.
In addition to testing known DoS attacks, ECI has performed the following
preventative measures to secure the SR9705:
Prioritize protocol traffic
Closed all unused ports (e.g., UDP echo, daytime, TCP FTP)
Disabled directed broadcasts by default
Limited number of half-open TCP connections to prevent SYN flooding
Limited connection rates for TCP services
Limited ICMP packet rate
Limited unresolved ARP packets
Added the ability to disable loose and strict source routed packets

High availability
To meet the rigorous uptime and reliability requirements of carrier edge
networks, the SR9705 minimizes network outages and improves service
resiliency through advanced recovery capabilities and scalable, modular
software.
The SR9705 software implementation minimizes the impact of individual
component failure, protecting against system corruption and ensuring reliable
operation even under extreme conditions. Hitless software upgrades
eliminate the need for reboots, maximizing system availability.
When an SR9705 chassis contains dual RCPs, you can enable high availability
features, including:
Redundant and synchronized RCPs Provides a warm standby RCP to
which the router can be switched either to perform software upgrades or
when the primary RCP fails.
Fast software upgrades Software upgrades, including firmware upgrades
on the line cards, only take approximately five minutes.
Fast failover for MPLS signaled layer 2 transports When an MPLS
secondary tunnel is configured for hot standby, the router switches more
than 10,000 virtual connections in one second when the primary tunnel fails.
BGP Graceful Restart Graceful Restart allows a BGP peer to retain the
routing information from a neighboring peer when it goes down for a certain
length of time. When the neighboring peer comes back up and router
receives the peers routing information, it compares that information with
the retained information. This allows the router to preserve the routing state
of BGP, even during short peer outages.
OSPF Graceful Restart OSPF Graceful Restart is a feature in OSPF that
allows an OSPF router to remain on the forwarding path of the network
while the router restarts OSPF. You can use Graceful Restart to minimize the
amount of LSA flooding and consecutive updating that occurs when OSPF
must be restarted.
IS-IS Graceful Restart The IS-IS Graceful Restart extension allows an
IS-IS router to remain on the forwarding path of the network while the
router restarts the protocol. You can use Graceful Restart to minimize the
amount of LSP flooding and consecutive updating that occurs when IS-IS
must be restarted.
LDP Graceful Restart LDP Graceful Restart allows LSRs to preserve the
label mappings of an LDP tunnel while the signaling LDP routers restart,
thus preserving the state of LDP tunnels during short outages.
Interface preservation Preserves the sate and configuration of the
interfaces during an RCP switchover. Interfaces are not reset.

Cooling System
The cooling system maintains an acceptable operating temperature for the
routers internal components. It consists of the following:
One removable fan tray to cool the router. The fan tray is located vertically
on the left front side of the router. The fan tray contains 18 fans. If any
single fan fails, an alarm is generated and the associated fan tray continues
to operate.
One replaceable air filter to filter incoming air. Air filters should be
inspected at least once a month and replaced every six months (more often
in dusty environments). For instructions, see Replacing Air Filters on page
8-7. To prevent damage to individual system components, the router should
not be run for extended periods without the fans tray (and associated air
filter) installed.
Air enters the system at the left side of the chassis and exits at the rear.

Backplane
The backplane houses the busses that interconnect all the components in the
system. All busses are point-to-point to allow hot-swapping and to enable the
systems redundant architecture. The backplane also distributes power from the
power system to the other system components.
Component Cards
This section provides a brief overview of the various types of component cards
that can be installed into the SR9075.
The following sections provide details on the component cards:
Network Processor Blade (NPB) Cards on page 2-9
Route Control Processor (RCP) on page 2-10
Network Processor Blade (NPB) Cards
The NPB cards contain the physical ports that enable a variety of network media
types to interface with the switch router and performs all packet processing
functions, including the forwarding of traffic between the various interfaces. It
is also responsible for determining packet classification, filtering, policing,
priority queuing, marking, and shaping.
NPB cards receive packets from and transmit packets to the network. The cards
direct traffic through the backplane and perform physical layer functions related
to framing, and input shaping. It also performs a lookup and determines the
appropriate forwarding (next hop) and Quality of Service (QoS) treatment. The

The RCP is the main controller for the SR9075 router. It performs the following
routing, signalling, and system management functions:
Running ShadeTree, including the Command Line Interface (CLI)
Authenticating and authorizing users of the ShadeTree software
Maintaining the operating configuration in memory
Downloading configuration changes to the hardware
Storing backup configuration files
Running routing protocols
Downloading routing updates to forwarding hardware
Hosting an in-band TCP/IP stack, which is used as a loopback address and
router ID
Hosting an out-of-band TCP/IP stack for management purposes
Running management protocols such as SNMP, TCP/IP, and CORBA
Providing various management and alarm interfaces, including:
Power monitoring LEDs for both -48V A and B feeds
Front panel RJ -45 serial port connection for console and auxiliary
Front panel RJ -45 100Mbps ethernet connection
Front panel alarm LEDs for viewing the alarms in the system
Front panel momentary switch for alarm cutoff reset and lamp test
functions
Removable SATA hard drives
USB 2.0 port
The router can house up to two RCP cards, one primary and one optional
secondary (for redundancy). At least one RCP card is required for the minimum
router configuration. For redundancy, each RCP is connected to each NPB
through internal links. An additional link connects the two RCPs for inter-
processor communication.

Rack-Mounting Guidelines
Because of its size and weight, the ECI recommends that you rack-mount the
SR9705. The SR9705 can be installed into most 19-in. (48.3cm) equipment
racks or standard telecommunications racks. (Up to four router chassis can be
mounted in a single 7-ft high by 19-in. wide telecommunications rack.) The
router can be either front-mounted or center-mounted.
General guidelines
The following are general rack-mounting guidelines:
Always bolt telecommunications racks to the floor to ensure stability.
Make sure the heaviest equipment is placed at the bottom of the rack.
If the router is to be mounted in a rack by itself, install it at the bottom of the
rack.
If the router is to be mounted in a rack with other equipment, load the rack
from bottom to top, installing the heaviest unit at the bottom to ensure
stability.
Whenever possible, install the router in an open rack. If you use an enclosed
rack, ensure that it has proper ventilation (i.e., an exhaust fan).
Avoid installing the router in an overly-crowded rack, as the heat from other
equipment may cause the router to overheat.
Ensure that all cabling in the rack is organized and does not impair access to
or interfere with the operation of the router.
Verify that the carrying capacity of the floor is adequate for the proposed
installation.

SR9705 Installation and Maintenance
Manual Preparing for Installation
SR9705-specific guidelines
The following are rack-mounting guidelines for the SR9705:
The SR9705 weighs 180lb. (81.6kg) fully configured. If you intend to
install four routers in one rack, ensure the rack is of adequate strength to
support the weight of four fully configured systems.
The SR9705 is 14in. high (35.6cm). Ensure that there is enough space in
the rack for the router chassis.
When mounting the SR9705 between two posts or rails, allow an inner
clearance of at least 17.7in. (44.9cm).
Make sure that there is a minimum of 3in. (7.5cm) of clearance at the
SR9705s inlet and exhaust vents.
Maintain at least 30in. (76cm) of clearance at the front of the rack and at
least 20in. (51cm) at the rear of the rack (for the removal/insertion of cards
and maintenance purposes).
Airflow guidelines
The router is air cooled. One hot-swappable fan trays (placed vertically on the
left front side of the router) cool the system, with air entering the system from
the right side of the chassis and exiting at the rear. Two replaceable air filters,
which slide directly into each fan tray, remove dust particles from the incoming
air.
The routers cooling system will not function properly if airflow is restricted,
causing an overtemperature condition. Follow these guidelines to maintain a
sufficient airflow:
Allow a minimum of 3in. (7.5cm) of clearance at both the inlet and exhaust
vents on the chassis.
Keep the site as dust-free as possible; dust particles can clog the air filter
and restrict airflow.
Use card blanks in all empty card slots to assist with proper airflow through
the card cages.
You can order card blanks from your ECI sales representative. The following
table lists the card cage slots and their associated card blank part numbers:

System power requirements
The maximum power consumption of the router is 2,455W. This value
represents the power requirements of a fully loaded system, including a margin
for future components.
You can determine the power requirements for your specific configuration using
the table below. This table lists the maximum power requirements of the
individual router components. You should base your calculations on the
maximum possible configuration you can anticipate. Otherwise, if you add new
components you may draw more power than the power distribution circuit can
handle, exposing it to circuit breaker trips or other potential safety problems. To
calculate the power requirements for your system, simply multiply the values in
the second column (power consumption) by the number of each component in
the system, and then add these values. An example is provided below.

from a commercial cable vendor.
You should use only copper wire (tinned or untinned); do not use aluminum
conductors. ECI recommends that you use high-strand count 4-AWG wire
cable.
The cable length is dependent upon the distance between your ground point and
the router.
Cabling Guidelines and Specifications
To ensure the proper operation of the interface cables, follow these guidelines:
WARNING: The AC-DC power supply unit uses a
three-wire power cord with a grounding-type plug.
This plug will only fit into a grounding-type power
outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of this
feature.
NOTE: For AC-powered routers, ECI recommends
that you use the system ground connection in
addition to the grounding provided by the AC power
outlet.
NOTE: The grounding cable must at least be of an
equivalent size as the DC power cables.

SR9705 Installation and Maintenance
Manual Preparing for Installation
Keep all cables organized and securely in place.
Ensure that the cables do not restrict access to other ports.
Make sure that the cables do not block the routers inlet and exhaust vents.
Keep the cables free of any sharp bends that can cause performance
degradation; never bend a cable beyond its minimum bend radius (refer to
the cable manufacturers specifications).
Ensure that the weight of the cables is evenly distributed, to prevent
excessive strain. Do not let cables hang free from their connectors and
dangle to the floor; doing so can put strain on the cables; rather use tie wraps
to organize and support the cables.
Interface cable specifications
The following table lists the specifications for the network cables and
connectors that are used with the router.
Site Wiring Considerations
When setting up the wiring for the router, you need to consider the following
factors:
Signal distance limitations Interference can occur whenever wires
exceed recommended distances or pass between buildings. You can help
avoid signaling problems by ensuring that your wiring is within the
manufacturers recommended distances.
Radio frequency interference (RFI) RFI is the disruption of radio signal
reception by a source generating waves at the same frequency. It can occur
whenever wires are improperly installed. You can limit RFI by following
proper wiring practices and by using high-quality twisted-pair cable and
distributed grounding conductors.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) EMI is the disturbance of signal
transmission or reception by electromagnetic fields. It can be caused by
natural (e.g., lightning) or manmade phenomenon. Powerful EMI can cause
power surges that could damage the routers componentry and/or create an
electrical hazard. You can help prevent damage from EMI by providing a
properly grounded and shielded environment and by using electric surge
protectors.
If your site has experienced problems with RFI or EMI in the past, you may
want to seek the advice of experts in electrical shielding and surge suppression.
Optic Connection Guidelines
The proper, efficient operation of an optical data link depends on whether it has
enough power to operate the receiver and is within maximum transmission
distances. Factors such as fiber-optic cable, power budget, and power margin
can affect the operation of a link.
Fiber-optic cable considerations
The router contains interfaces that use both single-mode and multimode fiber-
optic cable.
Single-mode and multimode fiber
Single-mode fiber allows only a single mode of light to propagate down the
fiber-optic path. This type of fiber provides high bandwidth and is typically used
for high-speed transmission over long distances.
Multimode fiber allows multiple modes of light to propagate down the fiber-
optic path. Because it is susceptible to dispersion, multimode fiber is commonly
used for transmission over short distances. This type of fiber can also be subject
to Higher Order Mode Loss (HOL), which occurs when light enters the fiber
and spreads into the fiber cladding.
Exceeding the recommended single-mode and multimode transmission
distances may result in signal loss and unreliable data transmission.
Attenuation and dispersion
Attenuation is the decrease in the power of a signal as it is transmitted between
points, expressed in decibels (dB). It is caused by cables, cable splices, and
connectors. Attenuation can occur in both single mode (0.5dB/km) and
multimode (1dB/km) transmissions.
Dispersion is the distortion of a signal caused by varying propagation
characteristics, expressed in decibels (dB). Dispersion occurs primarily in
multimode transmissions (500MHz/km limit). There are two types of
dispersion:
497006-2301-013-A00 ECI Telecom Ltd. Proprietary 4-11
SR9705 Installation and Maintenance
Manual Preparing for Installation
Chromatic The different wavelengths of light traveling at different speeds
Modal The broadening, or blurring, of a signal as it traverses a fiber
The sum of the attenuation and dispersion is the amount of power that is lost
over a link.
Calculating the power budget
The power budget (PB) is the difference between the transmitted power (PT)
and the receiver sensitivity (PR), measured in decibels (dB). It is the minimum
transmitter power and receiver sensitivity required for a signal to be sent and
received intact.
The following formula can be used to calculate the power budget:
PB =PT - PR
Single mode:
PB =-18.5 dBm - (-30 dBm)
PB =11.5 dB
Multimode:
PB =-15 dBm - (-28 dBm)
PB =13 dB
Calculating the power margin
The power margin (PM) is the difference between the power budget (PB) and
the link loss (LL), measured in decibels (dB).
The following table provides estimated values for common link-loss factors:
The following formula can be used to calculate the power margin:
PM =PB - LL
Table 4-8: Common link-loss factor values
Factor Estimated Value
Attenuation Single mode: 0.5dB/km
Multimode: 1dB/km
Dispersion Dependent on the type of fiber that is
used
Connector 0.5dB
Splice 0.5dB

0.5dB (multimode only)
4-12 ECI Telecom Ltd. Proprietary 497006-2301-013-A00
Preparing for Installation SR9705 Installation and Maintenance Manual
In principle, the link will function properly if the power margin is a positive
number. However, if the power margin is zero or a negative number, there may
not be enough power to operate the receiver.
Examples
Single mode:
This example calculates a single-mode power margin based on the following
criteria:
Two sites, 11km apart
Seven connectors
PM =11.5 dB - 11 km (0.5 dB/km) - 7 (0.5 dB)
PM =11.5 db - 5.5 dB - 3.5 dB
PM =2.5 dB
Multimode:
This example calculates a multimode power margin based on the following
criteria:
Two sites, 3km apart
Four connectors
Two splices
HOL
PM =13 dB - 3 km (1 dB/km) - 4 (0.5 dB) - 2 (0.5 dB) - 0.5 dB (HOL)
PM =13 db - 3 dB - 2 dB - 1 dB - 0.5 dB
PM =6.5 dB

To install a component card into the router, perform the following steps:
1. Attach an ESD wrist strap to yourself and to the grounding jack on the
chassis.
2. Select a component card and determine its appropriate card slot.
3. Ensure that the injector/ejector handles on the card are rotated outward,
away from the cards faceplate.
4. Gently grasp the faceplate (front) of the card with one hand and place your
other hand under the card to support and align it with the slot.
5. Carefully slide the card halfway into the slot. Then using two hands, grasp
the injector/ejector handles and gently slide the card until it contacts the
backplane. The outside edges of each injector/ejector handle should contact
the sides of the card cage or the vertical slot dividers.
6. Grasp the two injector/ejector handles on the card and rotate them fully
inward, towards the cards faceplate, fully seating the card in the slot.

Installing Card Blanks
Card blanks should be installed in all unoccupied chassis card cage slots. This
measure helps direct air flow through the chassis, restricts contact with currents
and voltages inside the router, provides electromagnetic interference (EMI)
shielding, and helps contain flames in the event of fire.
1. Attach an ESD wrist strap to yourself and to the grounding jack on the
chassis, as shown in Figure5-6 on page 5-10.
2. Select a card blank and determine its appropriate card slot.
3. Carefully slide the card blank into the slot, and tighten the captive screws on
the left and right side of the front panel..
4. Repeat steps 23 for each card blank that is to be installed.
About Automatic Firmware Upgrades
Firmware is installed on each component card. ShadeTree contains a master
image of the firmware. If you upgrade the ShadeTree software to a version that
contains updated firmware or install a card whose firmware is not at the current
version, the switch router will automatically begin to upgrade the firmware. The
upgrade is indicated visually through the cards status LEDs. When a NPB card
undergoes an upgrade, the ASF LED alternates between green and yellow.
When an RCP card undergoes an upgrade, the green LED illuminates and the
yellow LED flashes.
When the upgrade process is complete, the LEDs will return to their previous
state. However, the most accurate method for determining whether an upgrade
has completed is the CLI show chassis status command. If you are unsure

image of the firmware. If you upgrade ShadeTree to a version that contains
updated firmware or install a card whose firmware is not at the current version,
the router will automatically begin to upgrade the firmware (see the note below
for an exception). The upgrade is indicated visually through the cards status
LEDs.
When the upgrade process is complete, the LEDs will return to their previous
state. However, the most accurate method for determining whether an upgrade
has completed is the CLIs show chassis status command. If you are
unsure that an upgrade has completed, you should issue this command before
attempting to remove a card, power down the router, or restart ShadeTree. In the
show chassis status output (next to the card slot), you should see
present in the Present field and up in the Oper Status field. For more
information about this command, see the ShadeTree User Guide.
Before You Start
Before you upgrade ShadeTree, ECI recommends that you back up the current
configuration to the routers hard drive.
To back up your current configuration, perform the following steps from the
CLIs operation mode:
NOTE: This section assumes that you are upgrading
a chassis with a single RCP installed. For
information about upgrading a dual chassis system,
see the ShadeTree User Guide.
NOTE: To display information about the version of
ShadeTree the router is currently running, enter the
CLIs operation mode, and then issue the show
version command.
NOTE: Important! Do not remove a card, power
down the router, or restart ShadeTree while an
upgrade is in progress; doing so will damage the
affected cards. Wait until the upgrade has completed.

Installing the replacement power cables
Once the router has been de-energized, you can replace the DC power cables.
To install the replacement power cables, perform the steps below:
1. Obtain the power cables.
2. Ensure that the RTN and -48V terminals (shown in Figure8-6) are
completely open.
3. Verify that the DC power source has been wired according to the
manufacturers instructions. Using a voltmeter, measure the voltage across
the cable leads and ensure that it reads 0VDC.
4. Attach an ESD wrist strap to yourself and to the chassis.
5. Ensure that the circuit breaker on the DC power entry module is in the OFF
(O) position.
6. Using a Phillips screwdriver, loosen and remove the four screws securing
the clear plastic safety cover to the faceplate of the power entry module.
Remove the cover.
7. Align and place the lug connector for the positive (+) cable lug over the
RTN (return) terminal studs. Install a locking washer and nut (in that order)
on each terminal stud.
8. Using a torque driver with a 3/8-in. socket attachment, tighten the bolts until
they are torqued to approximately 27-lb.-in.
9. Align and place the lug connector for the negative (-) cable over the -48V
(input) terminal studs. Install a locking washer and nut (in that order) on
each terminal stud.
10. Using a torque driver with a 3/8-in. socket attachment, tighten the bolts until
they are torqued to approximately 27-lb.-in.
11. Gently tug on the installed cables to make sure they are secure in the
terminals.
To install power cables:
CAUTION: No color code standard exists for DC
wiring. As such, you should ensure that the wiring is
connected in the correct polarity, as reversed polarity
can damage the router. Typically, DC cables are
marked with negative (-) and positive (+) labels that
indicate polarity.
NOTE: When connecting the power cables, the lug
connectors should be positioned to allow the cables
to be routed horizontally, from left to right, across
the lower front of the router.

Caring for Fiber-Optic Cables
Many factors, such as mishandling, lint, and dust particles, can affect the life
span and performance of fiber-optic cable. You can help ensure the long life and
best possible performance of your cables by following these guidelines:
Never bend fiber-optic cable beyond its minimum bend radius (refer to the
cable manufacturers specifications).
Do not let cables hang free from their connectors and dangle to the floor;
doing so can put strain on the cables. Use tie wraps to bundle and support
the cables.
Routinely inspect cables for any sharp bends or kinks and replace any
damaged cables.
Place safety plugs over any open ports to prevent exposure to laser radiation
and to keep the ports free from debris.
Cleaning Fiber-Optic Connectors
You will need the following materials to clean the fiber-optic connectors:
Spray duster (commonly referred to as canned air). This item is available
from any electronics or photography store.
Foam-head swabs. The swabs are available from any electronics or
photography store.
Isopropyl alcohol.
WARNING: Invisible laser radiation may be emitted
from the aperture of optical ports when no fiber
cable is connected. Avoid exposure and do not stare
into open apertures.
WARNING: Do not stare into the laser beam or view
it directly with optical instruments.
