SOLID MENSURATION
PROBLEM SETS
I. Solve the following problems.

1. Compute the cost of lumber necessary
to resurface a foot-bridge 16 ft wide
and 150 ft long with 2-in planks, if
lumber is P 50.00 per board feet.
Neglect waste. ( One board feet = 1 ft
by 1 ft by 1 in )
2. A cylindrical tank, 2 feet in diameter
and 12 feet in length is placed so that
its axis is horizontal. How many pounds
of water is needed in filling it to a depth
of 18 inches, if water weighs 62.4 lb per
cu. ft.?
3. In the pyramid as shown in the figure,
AB = 9 cm, BC = 12 cm and BD = 5 cm.
The three face angles at B are each 90:.
Calculate the three face angles at A and
the total surface of the solid.

4. In the triangular pyramid shown in the
figure each face angle at O is 90:. Find
the volume of a cone whose vertex is at
V and whose base is a circle inscribed in
the base ABO of the pyramid.

5. It is required to measure the height of a
tower, CB as shown in the figure, which
is inaccessible. From point A, in the
same horizontal plane with the base C,
a right angle CAD is turned, and a
horizontal line AD, 150 ft in length is
measured. At A, the angle of elevation
of the top of the tower is 32:, at D the
angle of elevation is 28:. Find the height
of the tower.

6. The points A and E in the figure lie on
level ground in the same vertical plane
with the top G of the tower CG. If the
tower CG is 300 ft high and
measurements give, AB = 8 ft, DE = 12
ft, BH = 6 ft and DF = 5 ft, find the
distance AE.

7. Find the volume and total area of the
largest cube of wood that can be cut
from a log of circular cross-section
whose radius is 32.26 cm.
8. In the figure is shown a rectangular
parallelepiped whose dimensions are 4,
8, and 12. Points I, J, K, L, M and N are
each at the midpoint of an edge. Find
the area of the sections JKMN, JKL and
EGI.

9. A pyramid has its vertex at the center of
a cube and its base coincides with a
face of the cube. Find the angle that
each lateral face of the pyramid makes
with the base of the pyramid.
10. Two balls, one 6 inches in diameter and
the other 4 inches in diameter, are
placed in a cylindrical jar 9 inches in
diameter, as shown in the figure. Find
the volume of water necessary to cover
them.

11. A stone bridge has three equal
semicircular arches resting on four
equal rectangular piers. The radius of
each arch is R, the dimensions of the
piers L, W, H, while the distance from
the top of each pier to the top of the
bridge is D. If L = 50 ft, W = 5 ft, H = 10
ft, R = 6 ft, D = 12 ft, find the number of
cubic feet of materials used in building
the bridge.
