Mckinley Science: Photosynthesis Whole Class Date for Implementation: Monday, May 6 , 2014
Standard: NGSS-5 th grade---Support an argument that plants get the materials they need for growth chiefly from air and water
Objective: Students will be able to explain the process of photosynthesis using a paper representation.
Language Objective: Given a visual representation containing the relevant vocabulary, students will be able to explain and discuss the process of photosynthesis in their own words.
Formative Assessment: -During the TPS in the beginning of the lesson, ask questions such as What else do you know about photosynthesis?, Can anyone explain it in a different way? , and Where did you learn that information? in an effort to see where students are currently at in their understanding so that we can build off of that knowledge, or if need be, emphasize the basic concepts throughout the lesson for those that are still struggling to grasp them.
Summative Assessment: -Pay close attention to how students describe the process of photosynthesis at the end of the lesson, as well as what sorts of questions they are asking (are they questions about the process or questions about taking it a step further?). Make note of the students that do not show an in depth understanding of the process and come up with next steps.
Materials: Promethean Board to display video Crayons to color arrows Worksheet containing leaf and arrow cut outs with labels Glue Scissors
Differentiation: -I will use a video and a visual representation to support different types of learning styles. -I will spend extra time (and ask my CT to as well) supporting the students in the class that typically take longer to fully grasp concepts during the independent portion.
Introduction: -We have been learning all about living systems. A big part of plant systems is photosynthesis. Talk with your partner about what you know about photosynthesis -Have students share with the class what they know. -Explain that we will be watching a video to help us better understand photosynthesis. -Play movie: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/plants/photosynthesis.h tm -While watching the video, pay attention to the three things a plant takes in and the two things that the plant produces. -What did you learn from that movie? T.P. S
Body: -Each of you is going to get a paper that contains 5 arrows labeled as CO2, H2O, O2, sunlight, and C6H12O6 and a leaf. -you have 3 minutes to quickly color the leaf green and color each arrow a different color. -after you have colored, cut out each piece and put the arrows of the ones you think plants take in facing towards the leaf, and the ones that the plants produce facing outwards. Be ready to explain your reasoning and defend your answer. -have students share. Tell them that they can change their arrows if someone convinces them with reasoning. -come to a consensus as a class
Closure: -what questions do you have about photosynthesis? -does anyone have another way of remembering photosynthesis? -why is it important to know about photosynthesis?
