USF Elementary Education Lesson Plan Template (S 2014) Name: Sierra Gonzalez
Grade Level Being Taught:
1 st & 2 nd
Subject/Content: Symmetrical Monarch Butterfly Group Size: 12 students Date of Lesson: 7-7-14
Lesson Content Symmetrical Monarch Art Objectives- What are you teaching? (Student-centered: What will students know and be able to do after this lesson? Include the ABCDs of objectives: action, behavior, condition, and degree of mastery, i.e., "C: Given a sentence written in the past or present tense, A: the student B: will be able to re- write the sentence in future tense D: with no errors in tense or tense contradiction (i.e., I will see her yesterday.)." Note: Degree of mastery does not need to be a percentage.)
The students will be able to know the meaning of symmetry by constructing their own symmetrical Monarch butterfly.
What background knowledge is necessary for a student to successfully meet these objectives? Example: Need to know rules to play a game, how to work with others, etc...
Students will need to have experience with crafting (ie. Gluing, painting, etc.). They will also need to have a general idea about butterflies. Lesson Implementation Step-by-Step Plan (What exactly do you plan to do in teaching this lesson? Be thorough. Time: 30 min 1. Have students gathered on the carpet. 2. Ask: Who can tell me what a butterfly is? (open discussion). USF Elementary Education Lesson Plan Template (S 2014) Name: Sierra Gonzalez Grade Level Being Taught: 1 st & 2 nd

Act as if you needed a substitute to carry out the lesson for you.)
3. Ask: Who can tell me what a Monarch butterfly is? 4. Ask: Does anyone know any facts about Monarch butterflies? (turn and talk with a partner). 5. Have students share out loud (open discussion). 6. Tell students facts about Monarch butterflies: They migrate up to 3,000 miles in North America They have symmetrical wings, meaning they both have the same pattern on each wing (use the analogy of folding a square in half). 7. Have students return to the tables to create the craft (supplies should be on the tables ahead of time). 8. Fold a piece of paper in half. Open it back up. Now you have a line going down the middle. 9. Use a pencil to draw only one side of the Monarch butterfly on one side of the paper. (Start with the head, antennae, upper and lower wing.) Go over the pencil lines with black glue. 10. Fold the paper in half again. Open it back up. Now you have a complete butterfly and its perfectly symmetrical! 11. Paint with orange and black paint on one of the wings. 12. Fold the paper in half again. Open it back up. Now the wings are perfectly symmetrical! 13. Let it dry. 14. Have the students write in their writing journal about what they learned about Monarch butterflies. 15. Collect to assess their comprehension of the lesson.
Meeting your students needs as people and as learners If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural backgrounds of your students? Because butterflies are located throughout the world, the students will become familiar with a specific butterfly that resides in the United States.

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community? In the community, there are Monarch butterflies that can be found in gardens, on play grounds, or just out in nature in general.
How will you incorporate the arts (visual, dance and movement, music, drama, multimedia)? The students will be creating their own Monarch butterfly by drawing and painting.
Materials (What materials will you use? Why did you choose these materials? Include any resources you used. This can also include people!)
